Ashwin's Verdict: Rohit Sharma's Legacy Beyond ICC Titles

Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has showered praise on captain Rohit Sharma for building an impressive legacy as a white-ball batsman. Over the past couple of years, Rohit has taken charge of the team, leading India to two ICC titles—the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy—within just a year. The explosive opener has set a high bar at the top of the order with his bold batting style, showing aggressive intent during the powerplay, which has really benefited the middle order.

In the Champions Trophy final, the 37-year-old set the pace for India with a solid 76 runs in a challenging chase, dominating the Kiwi bowlers early on and putting them under pressure.

Ashwin, who played under Rohit's captaincy towards the end of his international career, shared his thoughts on Rohit's leadership skills.

“Since that semifinal loss against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Rohit has truly led by example. When a captain is ready to put his wicket on the line, it sends a clear message to the players about how they should approach the game," Ashwin mentioned on his YouTube channel.

The seasoned all-rounder emphasized that Rohit Sharma's true legacy isn't just about the back-to-back ICC titles or the five IPL trophies he’s won as captain. Instead, it’s about how he’s transformed the way batting is approached in white-ball cricket.

“Rohit’s real impact goes beyond just winning tournaments. Sure, he’s got five IPL titles with the Mumbai Indians and has led India to consecutive ICC victories, but that’s not what defines him. Rohit Sharma has revolutionized the batting style in Indian white-ball cricket, and that’s his greatest contribution,” he explained.

He went on to say that in the past, openers were expected to focus on scoring big and staying not out, but Rohit has flipped that script with his bold style of play.

“He’s a giant in ODI cricket. He’s really changed the mindset around batting in white-ball formats. Previously, the goal was to rack up big scores and not get out. Just remember, in India, the batting scene used to be all about the top three scoring heavily to boost their averages,” he added..

Rohit Sharma has shifted the way people think…

Ashwin also shared his thoughts on Rohit's batting style, suggesting that young cricketers should embrace it in white-ball formats to find success.

"The approach remains consistent even at the junior level; the goal is to stay not out and rack up big scores. As a batter in ODIs and T20s, it's crucial to play with a selfless attitude. Rohit Sharma has really shifted that mindset as a captain, leading by example and encouraging his players to do the same. Wishing him all the best; he’s truly been a rockstar for the Indian team," Ashwin mentioned.
