"Ashwin's Retirement: A Humble Reflection on Filling Legendary Shoes"

Team India’s prominent spinner Varun Chakaravarthy expressed his candid views regarding comparisons with Ravichandran Ashwin, stating that he has not yet reached a level where such discussions are warranted. Ashwin, a stalwart of Indian cricket, recently announced his retirement from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, a decision that surprised the cricketing community following the Brisbane Test. His last international match was the pink-ball Test at Adelaide Oval, where he scored 29 runs across two innings and claimed one wicket.

Chakaravarthy, also from Tamil Nadu, has emerged as India's leading spinner in the T20I format after a remarkable return to form last year.

The 33-year-old spinner remarked that Ashwin's legacy is "too significant to replicate," emphasizing that he is not yet in a position to be compared with the accomplished all-rounder.

"To compare me with him is quite an undertaking. Ashwin has represented India in all three formats, while I am still in the process of making my comeback. I have not yet reached a point where such comparisons are appropriate. However, every player who joins the Indian team aspires to have a long career. I am focused on my journey, allowing my hard work to guide my path. It is more beneficial to concentrate on my own progress rather than attempting to fill someone else's role. Ashwin's achievements are monumental; he has taken over 500 Test wickets, and I am far from that milestone," Varun stated on the eve of the second T20I in Chennai.

‘Have certain plans for certain batters’: Varun Chakravarthy

Chakravarthy made his return to the Indian national team last year following the T20 World Cup, and he has since emerged as the premier spinner for the squad. The 33-year-old has secured 20 wickets in his last eight T20 International matches, boasting an impressive average of 11.70, with his best performance being 5 wickets for 17 runs. He also excelled as the leading bowler in the senior opener against England, where he took 3 wickets for 23 runs, contributing to England's total of 132 runs.

Regarding his approach in Chennai during the second T20I, Chakravarthy stated that his strategies would remain consistent, while he would also observe the batting techniques employed against him.

"Essentially, I have specific plans tailored for particular batters, and that will largely remain unchanged. However, if they attempt to alter their approach, I will rely more on my instincts," he remarked.
