Ashwin to Rohit: Let New Zealand Call the Shots at Toss

Ashwin to Rohit: Let New Zealand Call the Shots at Toss

India's captain Rohit Sharma has experienced a streak of 11 consecutive toss losses in One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Ravichandran Ashwin hopes this pattern persists during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand. The former Indian spinner believes that Rohit Sharma should allow the New Zealand team to make the first decision in this crucial match.

Ashwin noted that India has successfully defended and chased targets throughout the eight-team tournament, indicating that the team should be well-equipped to handle any situation.

As the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket, Ashwin has identified Rohit Sharma and his team as the favorites for the final, while also acknowledging that New Zealand will present a formidable challenge.

“In my view, India should not focus on winning the toss. I would suggest they let it go, allowing New Zealand to make their choice. This could potentially place India in a challenging position. Nevertheless, India has demonstrated their capability to defend and chase effectively,” Ashwin remarked on his YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat’.

“From my perspective, I would estimate the odds at about 54-46 in favor of India. Although New Zealand's bowlers have posed difficulties for India in the past, they remain a very competitive team,” he concluded.

Kane Williamson versus Ravindra Jadeja key contest

Prior to the final, Ashwin highlighted the matchup between Kane Williamson and Ravindra Jadeja as a key point of interest. He expressed confidence that Jadeja could outmaneuver the former New Zealand captain due to his bowling speed.

"For those who appreciate cricket, the contest between Kane Williamson and Ravindra Jadeja stands out as particularly intriguing. When facing Jadeja, Williamson tends to shift towards the leg stump, aware that Jadeja poses a challenge. At times, he steps out to execute a chip shot over the bowler or towards extra cover," he remarked.

"He also attempts to play the cut shot from the back foot, creating a dynamic back-and-forth. Williamson aims to gain the upper hand over Jadeja, while Jadeja, in turn, adjusts his length and speed. Their rivalry resembles that of Tom and Jerry on the field. This duel could significantly influence the match's outcome, making it a captivating encounter between the two players," he continued.

Ashwin further noted that executing a cut shot against Jadeja is particularly challenging, which may prove detrimental for Williamson in the crucial match.

He elaborated, "Jadeja is faster than the average left-arm spinner. Playing the cut shot against him is difficult, and attempting to sweep him is nearly impossible. While a slog sweep may be feasible, the traditional sweep is not an option against Jadeja."

"Jadeja's edge over Williamson lies in his consistent pace and ability to generate turn. This is attributed to his excellent release technique, high release point, and the spin he imparts on the ball," he concluded.
