On this day in 2024, India achieved their most significant Test victory by runs, triumphing over England by an impressive margin of 434 runs at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. The match was highlighted by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exceptional double century, during which he set a record with 12 sixes, alongside Ravichandran Ashwin’s remarkable milestone of reaching 500 Test wickets. This defeat marked England's largest loss by runs in nearly a century.

Choosing to bat first, India encountered early challenges, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Shubman Gill (0) to a fierce spell from Mark Wood. However, the team regained composure as captain Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja formed a formidable partnership. Their 204-run stand for the fourth wicket proved to be the foundation of India's innings. Rohit excelled with a splendid score of 131, while Jadeja contributed 112. Debutant Sarfaraz Khan also made a notable impact, scoring a quick 62 off 66 balls, which featured nine fours and a six, before being run out. With valuable contributions from Dhruv Jurel (46) and Ashwin (37) later in the innings, India concluded their first innings with a total of 445 runs.

England's response

Adopting their 'Bazball' approach, England commenced their innings with a bold strategy. Opener Ben Duckett spearheaded the assault, scoring an impressive 153 runs at a brisk run-a-ball rate. His performance enabled England to reach a swift total of 224 for 2 in merely 40 overs. Nevertheless, the middle and lower order failed to build on this strong foundation, resulting in England being dismissed for 319 and facing a considerable first-innings deficit of 126 runs.

Jaiswal's record-breaking knock

In their second match, India sought to establish an unassailable target. Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased an exceptional performance, hitting a world-record 12 sixes on his way to an unbeaten 214. This innings marked his second double century of the series, with his explosive batting being further enhanced by a rapid 172-run partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, who notched his second half-century of the match. Their collaboration, scoring at an impressive rate of over 6.53 runs per over, left England with a formidable target of 557 runs.

Confronted with a challenging situation, England's batting order faltered under the mounting pressure. The team found itself at 50 for 7 within the first 25 overs, unable to cope with India's relentless bowling attack. Ravindra Jadeja was the principal architect of England's collapse, securing 5 wickets for 41 runs. His spin-bowling counterpart, Ravichandran Ashwin, also achieved a significant milestone during the match, becoming only the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to exceed 500 Test wickets, accomplishing this in record time.
