Ashwin Hits Back at ‘Dubai Advantage’ Critics: ‘I Can Only Laugh…’

The ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 has proven to be a remarkable spectacle for cricket enthusiasts, offering a wealth of thrilling entertainment. The tournament has been marked by significant drama and disappointment, notably highlighted by the early exit of the host nation, Pakistan.
Additionally, the event has not been without its controversies, particularly concerning the location of the final match between India and New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma and his team did not travel to Pakistan for the tournament due to geopolitical tensions between the two countries. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requested a neutral venue, a request that was granted by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which subsequently designated Dubai as the location for all of India's matches.
This decision has faced criticism from both former and current players of various teams, many of whom argue that it provides India with a home advantage during the tournament. Notably, Australian captain Pat Cummins, who was unable to participate due to injury, also expressed his disapproval of the decision, suggesting that it creates an inequitable advantage for India.
R Ashwin responds to Team India's Dubai critics
R. Ashwin, who recently declared his retirement from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, chose to address the ongoing controversy and criticized the detractors of Team India.
"I can only find humor in the inquiries posed to our captain and coaches during the press conference regarding 'home advantage.' In the 2009 Champions Trophy, South Africa played all their matches at a single venue and failed to qualify for the final. It is not South Africa's fault for their non-qualification. We must acknowledge that India has demonstrated exceptional cricketing skills and has reached the final through outstanding performances. The last time India played in Dubai was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, New Zealand, England, and South Africa have also competed in Dubai," Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel.
He continued, "This narrative suggests that one team comes to India, loses 4-0, and then blames the pitch. It is unfair to tarnish our players' reputations with such claims. I find it troubling that even some Indian fans subscribe to this narrative. I still experience anxiety; my feelings are not entirely positive. Following New Zealand's victory over South Africa, I am left wondering, 'Could they hurt us again?'"
The final match between India and New Zealand is set to take place on Sunday, commencing at 2:30 PM IST. India finished at the top of Group A and subsequently triumphed over Australia in the semi-finals. In contrast, New Zealand secured the second position in Group A, lost to India, and then defeated South Africa in the semi-finals to reach the final showdown.
