Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Varun Chakaravarthy was the pivotal factor in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, as his contributions played a crucial role in securing victory for Rohit Sharma and his team. Although the mystery spinner did not participate in every match of the eight-team tournament, he managed to confound opposing batters during his limited appearances.
In the three matches he played, the 33-year-old claimed nine wickets. During the final, when New Zealand was aggressively pursuing runs, it was Varun who struck first by dismissing Will Young. He followed this by taking out Glenn Phillips, which significantly shifted the momentum in favor of India.
Ashwin expressed that Varun should have been awarded the Player of the Tournament title, citing his unique impact and the 'X factor' he brought to the team. For context, Rachin Ravindra received the Player of the Tournament accolade for amassing 263 runs in four matches, including two centuries.
"Regardless of the outcome, I firmly believe that Varun Chakaravarthy was the true Player of the Tournament. His absence from the entire tournament did not diminish his impact. Without Varun Chakaravarthy, the outcome of this match could have been markedly different. He introduced an X-factor and an element of surprise. If I were the adjudicator, I would have awarded him the title. He was the most significant difference," Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'.
"Consider how he dismissed Glenn Phillips. Phillips was not covering his stumps, allowing Varun to bowl a googly from wide of the crease. In my opinion, Varun deserves the Player of the Series award. The accolade should go to the individual who made the most substantial impact. Varun Chakaravarthy is truly deserving of the Player of the Series recognition," he concluded.
'Hats off to Indian bowlers'
In the final match against New Zealand, India's spin quartet comprising Varun, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja bowled a total of 38 overs, allowing 144 runs while claiming five wickets.
Ashwin praised the team's effort in limiting New Zealand to 251 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs, emphasizing that the victory in the Champions Trophy is entirely attributed to the Indian bowlers.
"I am extremely pleased for Rohit and Gautam Gambhir. One must consider what GG is experiencing. After losing a Test series to New Zealand and facing several defeats, he made a commendable decision. The absence of Jasprit Bumrah was notable. Remarkably, this Indian team secured the Champions Trophy without him. What does this signify? What implications does it have for Indian cricket? I am truly delighted. I believe it will take the world some time to catch up with Indian cricket," Ashwin remarked.
"This Champions Trophy is entirely dedicated to the bowlers. Without Jasprit Bumrah, I commend the bowlers," he further stated.
India successfully chased down the target of 252 runs with ease, as Rohit Sharma contributed a score of 46. Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer also played significant roles in leading India to victory.
