Mumbai: Pace bowlers are particularly fond of the opportunity to bowl at Wankhede Stadium for good reason. Among Indian cricket venues, it is known for providing excellent pace, bounce, and movement. During the Indian Premier League match on Monday evening, the conditions were particularly favorable, with a breeze blowing in from the Arabian Sea.

The Mumbai Indians' pace attack effectively capitalized on these conditions after choosing to bowl first against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar set a strong precedent by taking wickets in the opening two overs, while left-arm bowler Ashwani Kumar made a significant impact on his debut. Captain Hardik Pandya also bowled skillfully, maintaining the pressure on the opposition. Consequently, KKR was dismissed for a mere 116 runs in 16.2 overs.

After a disappointing last season that saw them finish at the bottom and starting this season with two losses, MI fans finally had a reason to celebrate as their batters successfully chased down the target in just 12.5 overs, securing an eight-wicket victory. Although Rohit Sharma had another modest performance with 13 runs, opener Ryan Rickelton delivered an impressive unbeaten 62 off 41 balls.

DREAM START

In a thrilling opening, KKR found themselves in dire straits, losing half their team by the end of the seventh over, as the home team's pace attack excelled, leaving them at 45/5. Following early breakthroughs by seasoned swing bowlers Boult and Chahar, Ashwani emerged as the standout performer, claiming four wickets and becoming the first Indian bowler to achieve this feat on his debut.

With a fluid run-up, the Punjab pacer delivered the ball with a smooth action. While not the fastest, he was quick enough to challenge the batters, consistently landing the ball on the seam. Although conditions at other venues may prove more challenging, he demonstrated his potential to be highly effective on a responsive pitch.

When called upon to bowl the fourth over of the Powerplay, Ashwani made an immediate impact, taking a wicket with his very first delivery. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane misjudged the young bowler's abilities, attempting to attack his opening ball, only to edge it to a fielder at deep backward point.

Captain Pandya opted to remove him after just one over in the Powerplay, reintroducing him in the 11th over. In his second over, Ashwani truly caught everyone's attention by striking twice, dismissing both Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey.

He continued his impressive performance by taking the crucial wicket of the dangerous Andre Russell, leaving KKR struggling at 88/8 after 12.4 overs. His final bowling figures were an impressive 4 wickets for 24 runs in 3 overs.

In addition to his solid fundamentals, he displayed maturity by varying his length to keep the batters uncertain. Both Rinku and Andre Russell can attest to this. After conceding a boundary to Rinku, he adjusted by delivering a shorter and wider ball on the next delivery. The left-handed batsman attempted to replicate his previous shot but ended up slicing it to deep point, where Naman Dhir took the catch. Against Russell, he followed a short ball with a fuller delivery, resulting in the West Indian missing a slog and being bowled out.

The exhibition of bowling was truly remarkable. Earlier, Manish Pandey, who was introduced as an Impact Player, fell victim to an exceptional delivery. The experienced batsman was caught off guard as the ball skidded off the pitch, striking the top of the leg stump.

“In my village (Jhanjeri, near Mohali), everyone was eagerly watching. They had been anticipating my debut, and by God’s grace, I received the opportunity tonight and performed well,” Ashwani shared during his mid-innings interview. “I felt some pressure at the start, but the supportive team atmosphere alleviated that feeling.”

During their peak years, MI benefitted greatly from their fast bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah has continued the legacy of Lasith Malinga, while players like Mitchell Johnson and Trent Boult had outstanding seasons in between.

This is why the franchise is meticulous about their pace selections. In this auction, they successfully reacquired Boult and added Chahar to partner with Bumrah. While they await Bumrah’s recovery from injury, Boult and Chahar demonstrated their effectiveness while bowling in Mumbai.

Boult initiated KKR’s decline on Monday by delivering a perfect yorker that dismissed Sunil Narine on the fourth ball of the match. From the opposite end, Chahar, with his first delivery, forced Quinton de Kock into a false shot. Returning to bowl the crucial final over of the Powerplay, Chahar surprised Venkatesh Iyer with a delivery that lifted after pitching, resulting in a catch behind off the glove.
