Ashutosh Sharma's ascent in the IPL's popularity rankings began during the previous season when he made significant contributions for the Punjab Kings. However, the franchise opted to release him, which turned out to be a missed opportunity for Punjab and a fortunate acquisition for the Delhi Capitals. DC secured Ashutosh during the mega auction for INR 3.8 crore. The second season is often regarded as the most challenging for any emerging cricketer, as the element of surprise diminishes and teams become more adept at countering threats. Nevertheless, Ashutosh managed to dispel the challenges of a sophomore slump with a standout performance in just one match.

In his debut match for the Delhi Capitals in the 18th season, the right-handed batsman demonstrated that his previous success was no mere coincidence. Ashutosh proved he is a formidable presence in the league by leading the Axar Patel-captained team to an unexpected victory against the Lucknow Super Giants, successfully chasing down a target of 210 runs despite being in a precarious position at 65/5.

At 26 years old, Ashutosh initially struggled to find his rhythm, scoring only 20 runs off 20 balls at one point. However, in the final three overs, as he continued to lose partners, he found his stride, finishing with an impressive 66 runs off 31 balls. His efforts secured a thrilling win for Delhi, with just one wicket remaining and three balls to spare.

After receiving the Player of the Match award, Ashutosh shared that he had been visualizing match-winning scenarios in his mind before the IPL commenced, underscoring his dedication to professional growth and improvement.

In a recent media interaction on Friday, Ashutosh Sharma elaborated on his preparation and strategies aimed at delivering his best performance for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025.

"When asked if I focused on a specific area to excel in the finisher role, I can say I did not target anything in particular. The season is extensive, featuring the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Our practice sessions occur during these tournaments. Additionally, the DC management organized a pre-season camp for us, where I honed my skills. We also participated in several practice matches, which have greatly benefited me. The management has taken excellent care of us, and the results are evident," Ashutosh stated in response to a question from Hindustan Times during the JioStar - Delhi Capitals Press Room.

The innovative batsman from Delhi Capitals also shared insights into his practice regimen for range hitting, which he began prior to the IPL, allowing him to effectively handle wide yorkers.

"I have dedicated significant time to practice; whenever I have some free time, I spend 2-3 hours focusing on my range hitting. This has proven to be very beneficial. Achieving precision in practice is essential, and I apply this to improve my performance against wide yorkers," Ashutosh explained.

"It ultimately comes down to the amount of hard work you invest. While there are various factors at play, hard work is paramount if you aim to master your shots against wide yorkers. During my innings, I concentrated solely on my process and aimed to take the game deep," he concluded.

Role of Shikhar Dhawan, Kevin Pietersen and MS Dhoni

Following his victory with the Delhi Capitals, Ashutosh Sharma showcased the 'switch hit' celebration as a tribute to the franchise's mentor, Kevin Pietersen. The former England captain joined the Delhi team prior to the 18th season of the IPL. Ashutosh shared how Pietersen inspired him to maintain confidence in his ability to finish matches, regardless of the challenges faced.

"In the game, I had a conversation with KP in the dugout. He encouraged me to express myself and to trust in my own skills. Knowing that he had such faith in me motivated me to dedicate my celebration to him. He is a true legend. Even when we were losing wickets, he kept reassuring me that I could succeed," Ashutosh remarked.

"I am thoroughly enjoying my time in the dugout with him. He has been incredibly supportive during practice sessions, consistently offering his insights. Having played at such a high level, learning from him is an invaluable experience," he continued.

Ashutosh also highlighted the significant role his mentor, Shikhar Dhawan, played in preparing him for the challenges ahead in his cricketing journey. The two spent time together while representing Punjab Kings last year. After the match against Lucknow, Ashutosh dedicated the Player of the Match award to the Indian cricket legend.

Following the game between Delhi and Lucknow, Shikhar Dhawan even reached out to Ashutosh via video call to commend the young player's performance.

"He is my mentor. Since last year, during our camp for Punjab Kings, I have been in constant communication with him. He has guided me on numerous aspects of the game, particularly the mental side. He emphasizes that while every player possesses unique skills, mindset and self-belief are crucial for success. This advice has been immensely beneficial to me. He was very pleased with my performance and always reminds me to remain humble and grounded," Ashutosh stated.

Interestingly, not many are aware that even MS Dhoni was impressed by Ashutosh's performance last season. The legendary Indian captain also shared valuable advice with the aspiring finisher, who aims to make a significant impact in the sport.
