The Indian Premier League (IPL) has consistently been a platform where talent meets opportunity, making it unsurprising that new stars emerge rapidly within this lucrative league. On Monday, Ashutosh Sharma continued his impressive form from the previous season, delivering a remarkable performance for the Delhi Capitals against the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. Head coach Hemang Badani disclosed that Ashutosh had sustained a cut on his finger, which raised concerns about his availability for the match against the team led by Rishabh Pant.
At one point, the Delhi Capitals appeared to be in dire straits, struggling at 65/5 while pursuing a target of 210 runs. Nevertheless, the young duo of Ashutosh Sharma and Viprag Nigam forged a crucial partnership of 55 runs for the seventh wicket, revitalizing Delhi's chances in the match.
Ultimately, the outcome hinged on Ashutosh Sharma, who found himself losing partners as the innings progressed. With six runs required from the final over and only one wicket remaining, Mohit Sharma successfully got the right-hander on strike, leading to a memorable finish. Ashutosh, who had entered the game as an impact substitute, struck a six down the ground to clinch victory for Delhi, leaving the franchise owners and mentor Kevin Pietersen thoroughly impressed.
In a post-match address to the Delhi Capitals team in the dressing room, head coach Hemang Badani praised Ashutosh for exhibiting a 'tiger mentality' by opting to play despite his injury.
"I must highlight this young man. He had a cut on his finger, and there was a possibility he could have missed the match. I spoke with him two days before the game when he had the injury, asking, 'How are you feeling? Will you be able to play?'" he recounted.
"He responded decisively, 'I am playing the game. I want to be in the middle.' There’s a significant difference between expressing a desire to play and actually performing as he did. At one point, he was 15 off 15 balls, but then he went on to score 66 off 31, finishing the game in style," he concluded.
Ashutosh Sharma dedicates POTM award to Shikhar Dhawan
Ashutosh Sharma received the Player of the Match award for his impressive innings of 66 runs off 31 balls. He chose to dedicate this recognition to his mentor, Shikhar Dhawan, with whom he played alongside last season for the Punjab Kings.
Following the match against LSG, Ashutosh Sharma made a video call to Shikhar Dhawan, and the two were seen engaging in conversation.
The Delhi Capitals are set to compete against SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday, March 30. KL Rahul, who was absent for the match against LSG, is anticipated to return for the upcoming game against Pat Cummins and his team.
Additionally, KL Rahul and his wife, Athiya Shetty, celebrated the arrival of their first child on Monday.
