Arshdeep Singh's rapid ascent in 2024 culminated on Saturday with his recognition as the ICC T20I Cricketer of the Year at the age of 25. The left-arm fast bowler was instrumental in India's T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean and the USA last year, solidifying his status as one of the team's essential bowlers during a year characterized by remarkable performances.
Since his international debut in 2022, Arshdeep has been heralded as a future star, quickly establishing himself in T20 internationals with significant contributions during both powerplay and death overs.
He triumphed over notable competitors, including Pakistan's Babar Azam, Australia's Travis Head, and Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza, to secure this prestigious award.
In 2024, Arshdeep emerged as India's top wicket-taker in T20Is, amassing an impressive 36 wickets across just 18 matches. Despite operating in high-pressure situations, he maintained an exceptional average of 15.31 and a commendable economy rate of 7.49. Among T20I bowlers worldwide, only four players surpassed his wicket tally, with Wanindu Hasaranga being the sole representative from a full-member nation.
Arshdeep's exceptional performances were particularly evident during the T20 World Cup; he dominated the group stage match against the USA with outstanding figures of 4/9. However, it was in the final against South Africa that he truly demonstrated his capabilities.
While defending a total of 176, Arshdeep made crucial early breakthroughs by dismissing the formidable Aiden Markram and disrupting a threatening partnership by taking out Quinton de Kock. With the Proteas requiring 20 runs from the last two overs, Arshdeep executed a remarkable penultimate over, conceding only four runs, which set the stage for Hardik Pandya to secure the victory.
Arshdeep part of T20Is vs England
Arshdeep's capacity to perform effectively in high-pressure situations, his reliability across different playing surfaces, and his talent for securing crucial breakthroughs have rendered him an essential component of India's T20I team.
Currently, he is participating in India's T20I series against England. Due to his steady performances in the shortest format, Arshdeep earned an ODI call-up last year and continues to be a vital member of the fifty-over squad. He has been included in the 15-member roster for the Champions Trophy, where India is set to compete in all their matches in Dubai.
