Arshdeep Singh made history on Wednesday by surpassing spinner Yuzvendra Chahal to become India's all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals. He achieved this milestone by taking the wicket of Ben Duckett during the first T20I against England, where he also matched Chahal's record in the same game. Arshdeep struck early, dismissing Phil Salt in his first over and then getting Duckett in the second.

Having been a key player in the Indian T20I squad for several years, Arshdeep reached this achievement in his 61st match in the format. He stands out as one of the few left-arm bowlers in India, and just last week, he was included in the Indian ODI squad for the Champions Trophy.

Here’s a look at India’s top-5 highest wicket-takers in T20s (* indicates players currently in the XI against England in the 1st T20I):

  • Arshdeep Singh - 97*
  • Yuzvendra Chahal - 96
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar - 90
  • Jasprit Bumrah - 89
  • Hardik Pandya - 89*

Arshdeep still has a long way to go to catch up with the top T20I wicket-taker, Tim Southee from New Zealand, who boasts an impressive 164 wickets in 126 games. Following him are Rashid Khan from Afghanistan with 161 wickets, Shakib Al Hasan from Bangladesh with 149, Ish Sodhi from New Zealand with 138, and Mustafizur Rahman from Bangladesh with 132, rounding out the top five.

India chose to field

Team India made their return to T20I cricket after a break of more than two months, with their last match being in November against South Africa. Suryakumar Yadav chose to bowl first in Kolkata, but fans were bummed about Mohammed Shami not being in the lineup.

Shami was making his first international appearance in 14 months after recovering from an injury, and his return was a hot topic during the first T20I in Kolkata. He’s also included in the ODI squad for the series against England and the Champions Trophy next month, where India will play all their games in Dubai.
