Arshdeep Cautions Rivals: Champions Trophy Will Be a Tough Challenge
28 days ago | 5 Views
Team India encountered a considerable challenge earlier this week when Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury. Harshit Rana, who made his One Day International debut earlier this month during the series against England, has been selected as his replacement in the 15-member squad for this prestigious tournament. Rana's addition renders India's pace bowling lineup relatively inexperienced; Arshdeep Singh has participated in only nine ODIs to date, and although Mohammed Shami is an experienced fast bowler, he returned to the national team only last month after being sidelined for over a year due to injuries.
Former England cricketer and commentator David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd commented on Bumrah's absence, expressing concerns regarding Arshdeep's dependability in the fifty-over format.
“You are going to miss him (Bumrah),” Lloyd stated during an interview with TalkSPORT.
“You can't ignore the fact that the best bowler in the world isn't playing, which presents a significant issue.”
Bumrah was instrumental in India's T20 World Cup triumph last year, taking 15 wickets in 8 matches with an impressive economy rate of 4.17. He experienced back spasms during the fifth and final Test of the series against Australia in Sydney last month, which led to his withdrawal from the crucial second innings of the match, contributing to India's 3-1 series defeat.
Lloyd on Arshdeep
The former England cricketer expressed that Arshdeep may encounter difficulties in spearheading the bowling attack in One Day Internationals (ODIs), emphasizing that the format differs significantly from T20, where Arshdeep is a consistent performer.
"If you are the opposing team, you should test him thoroughly and apply pressure.
"This is not T20; this is not a casual affair. You must be prepared to return and face him repeatedly, which is an experience he may not be accustomed to.
“If you are the opposition, you should exploit that and see what he can deliver,” remarked Lloyd.
Arshdeep has taken 14 wickets in nine ODIs and showcased commendable performance in India's concluding match of the series against England last week. He achieved figures of 2/33 in five overs, dismissing both English openers – Ben Duckett and Phil Salt – thereby giving India a crucial advantage as they successfully defended a target of 357 runs in Ahmedabad.
The Champions Trophy is set to commence on February 19, with India beginning their campaign next week against Bangladesh in Dubai.
