India, April 24 -- With Neeraj Chopra's NC Classic Javelin event set for May 24, Paris Olympics gold medalist Arshad Nadeem was anticipated to be a major draw. However, to the dismay of supporters, Nadeem recently announced that he has turned down the invitation, as it conflicts with his training for the Asian Athletics Championship.

As reported by PTI, Nadeem appreciates the invitation from Neeraj but is focused on his preparations for the forthcoming Asian Championship, which is scheduled for May 27-31. Nadeem's choice comes in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

"The (NC) Classic event is from 20th May (May 24) while I am planned to depart for Korea on 22nd May for the Asian Athletics Championship," he stated.

Previously, Chopra had mentioned, "I have sent an invitation to Arshad, and he indicated he would respond after consulting with his coach. As of now, he has not yet confirmed his participation. "

Nadeem holds the title of reigning Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion, along with being the current World Athletics Championship silver medalist. His throw of 92. 97 meters at the Paris Olympics is an Olympic and Asian record, as well as the sixth longest throw in the history of the sport.

The Neeraj Chopra Classic Javelin event will feature athletes like Anderson Peters and Thomas Rohler, who have confirmed their attendance. Peters is a two-time world champion from Grenada, while Rohler is the gold medalist from the 2016 Olympics.

The event has received a Category A designation from World Athletics, and the location has been changed from Panchkula to Bengaluru due to lighting and live broadcast concerns.

"I wanted the event in Panchkula, but there are specific issues related to lighting (floodlight) at the stadium there. The World Athletics standard is 600 lux (a measurement of light intensity) for international broadcasts, which is lacking (in Panchkula) and it will take time (to install it)," Chopra clarified.

"For this year, we have opted to move the event to Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. I believe the evening climate in Bengaluru will be ideal for the event, both for the athletes and the spectators," he continued.
