Virat Kohli's time as the captain of India's Test team raised the bar and set high expectations, especially during tours to SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). In those challenging environments, the Indian squad was expected to step up their game. Kohli led India to their first-ever series victory in Australia in 2018-19, but it wasn't an easy road, as they faced a tough 1-4 defeat in England the summer before.

Actor Varun Dhawan gave some insight into Kohli's mindset during that tough series, sharing what he learned from Kohli's wife, actress Anushka Sharma, about how he dealt with the challenges.

On Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, ‘The Ranveer Show’, Dhawan said, “Virat has gone through a lot, especially during his rough patches, and Anushka shared some interesting thoughts on his mindset with me.”

Dhawan mentioned, "I believe it was a Test match in Nottingham. India ended up losing, and she told me she didn’t go to that game. When she returned, she had no idea where Virat was. She walked into the room and found him lying there, actually in tears."

He handled everything by himself…

Dhawan probably mixed up his Test matches, since the only one India won in that series was at Trent Bridge, but the tough losses still stung. He mentioned, “He took it all on himself, saying he failed, even though he was the top scorer that day. He was the captain.”

Dhawan, who acted alongside Anushka Sharma in the 2018 movie Sui Dhaaga before her break from Bollywood, is likely recalling the Edgbaston Test in Birmingham that kicked off the series. Kohli scored 149 in the first innings and added a solid 51 in the chase, but India fell just 31 runs short.

Kohli had a great run in England during the 2021 tour, leading India to a 2-1 advantage in the first four Tests with standout victories at the Oval and Lord’s. Unfortunately, the last match of the series got postponed due to a Covid outbreak, and when India came back to finish it, Kohli was no longer the captain. As a result, India lost that match, ending the series in a draw.

Now, Kohli is set to make his comeback for India in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After a rain-affected draw at the Gabba, the series is currently tied at 1-1 following three Tests.
