KL Rahul decisively concluded India's pursuit against Australia in the semi-final with a six, remaining not out at 42 runs from 34 deliveries. Throughout the tournament, Rahul has occupied the No. 6 batting position, while all-rounder Axar Patel has batted ahead of him at No. 5. Renowned former cricketer Anil Kumble has expressed the opinion that Rahul should be positioned higher in the batting order than Axar.

"He ought to have batted before Axar Patel," Kumble remarked during ESPNcricinfo Match Day. "While Axar contributed significantly to the partnership with Virat Kohli, having a player like KL Rahul enter the game at that moment is crucial—if he reaches 30 runs, he will help ensure victory.

“He consistently performs at that level. Although he missed an opportunity in the previous match against New Zealand, KL is undoubtedly a player of high caliber. This performance will undoubtedly bolster his confidence."

‘He has showed what he is capable of’

Rahul has remained unbeaten in the 40s during two of the three innings he has participated in so far in this tournament, boasting a strike rate of 96.36. Kumble remarked, “There is significant pressure on him. If he performs well, it is anticipated. However, if he falters in even one innings, the scrutiny intensifies. He faced pressure, particularly with his wicketkeeping in the previous match, but today he demonstrated his true potential.”

Following the match against Australia, Rahul expressed that he finds comfort in the trust placed in him by captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. He candidly shared his frustration regarding the ongoing uncertainty about his position in the playing XI, despite adhering to the directives given by Rohit.

"Whenever I excel in a series and there is a hiatus from ODI matches, upon returning after four or five months, questions arise again about my inclusion in the XI and my role. At times, I find myself wondering what more I can do.

In every position I have been asked to play, I have fulfilled my responsibilities, and I believe I have performed effectively. I have followed Rohit's instructions to the best of my ability, and I am aware that he shares this sentiment, consistently supporting and backing me. This assurance instills confidence as I approach the game, knowing that the captain is behind me," he concluded.
