On this date in 2008, at the WACA Ground in Perth, the esteemed Indian cricketer Anil Kumble etched his name in history by securing his 600th Test wicket. This significant achievement was instrumental in India's remarkable triumph over Australia in the third Test of the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Kumble attained the 600-wicket milestone during the first innings of the Australian team. Following the tea interval on the second day, he had Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip, thus marking his 600th Test dismissal. This accomplishment made Kumble the first Indian bowler and only the third bowler globally, following spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, to reach this prestigious landmark.

A famous win at Perth

The third Test match between India and Australia held in Perth was notable for various reasons. India, having suffered defeats in the first two Tests, faced considerable pressure. After winning the toss, India chose to bat first, accumulating a total of 330 runs in their initial innings, bolstered by significant performances from Rahul Dravid, who scored 93 runs, and Sachin Tendulkar, who contributed 71 runs. In reply, Australia struggled with their batting, managing only 212 runs, while Anil Kumble took two wickets.

In their second innings, India set a challenging target of 413 runs for Australia. Despite a determined effort from Michael Clarke, who scored 81 runs, and a frustrating partnership between Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark, Australia was dismissed for 340 runs. This result secured a 72-run victory for India, with Kumble again taking two wickets in the second innings. This triumph was particularly meaningful as it ended Australia’s remarkable run of 16 consecutive Test victories and marked India’s first Test win at the WACA, a ground where no visiting team, apart from the formidable West Indies teams, had triumphed since the 1985-86 season.

Additionally, this victory highlighted Kumble's leadership qualities, as he guided India to a significant win in Perth following the controversial Test match in Sydney, which was overshadowed by contentious umpiring decisions and the "Monkeygate" incident involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds.

Throughout his 18-year Test career, Kumble participated in 132 matches, taking 619 wickets at an average of 29.65. His capacity to adapt and excel in various conditions established him as one of India's most formidable match-winners.
