India, Jan. 28 -- Renowned chess player Viswanathan Anand recounted his experience filming an advertisement featuring the newly crowned World Champion Gukesh, which has gained significant attention online. The two chess grandmasters, representing different eras, appeared together in this promotional piece.
Anand recently commented on the experience, noting that Gukesh's delivery of a punchline to the actor portraying his manager was quite atypical for him.
"The moment when he addresses his manager is rather uncharacteristic of Gukesh. He likely faced some challenges with it," Anand remarked in a video.
In December of the previous year, the 18-year-old Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest world champion, triumphing over China's Ding Liren. He is only the second Indian, following the illustrious Viswanathan Anand, to reach this milestone.
Additionally, Gukesh was honoured with the esteemed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award by President Droupadi Murmu during a prestigious National Sports Awards ceremony.
Recently, Gukesh surpassed fellow Indian Arjun Erigaisi to secure the position of the highest-ranked Indian chess player, now ranked fourth in the latest FIDE standings.
The 18-year-old accomplished this milestone by securing his second victory at the Tata Steel Tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands, where he triumphed over Germany's Vincent Keymer. He has accumulated a rating of 2784 points, while Erigaisi, who previously held the title of the highest-ranked Indian player, has fallen to fifth place with a rating of 2779.5 points.
Grandmaster R Praggnanadhaa engaged in a solid draw against World Champion D Gukesh during the eighth round of the Tata Steel Masters.
In the Berlin Defense, Praggnanadhaa, playing with the white pieces, appeared to have a slightly advantageous position. However, Gukesh remained vigilant in his defence. Early in the middle game, Gukesh opted to sacrifice a pawn to initiate his counterplay. Despite Praggnanadhaa's attempts to capitalize on the situation, the game consistently leaned towards a draw.
Following the exchange of queens, the players transitioned into a rook and minor piece endgame. Gukesh effectively utilized his resources, even managing to create an outside passed pawn. With Praggnanadhaa's rook solely focused on countering the pawn, the outcome of the game was never in question. The game concluded in a draw after 33 moves.
