‘Am I Part of the Problem?’: Jos Buttler to Announce Captaincy Decision After England's Loss to Afghanistan

‘Am I Part of the Problem?’: Jos Buttler to Announce Captaincy Decision After England's Loss to Afghanistan

Jos Buttler has now experienced seven consecutive defeats as the captain of England's white-ball team. The most recent loss, against Afghanistan, is particularly painful as it eliminated England from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This marks England's second exit from the group stage in consecutive ICC events within the 50-over format over the past eighteen months. Since succeeding Eoin Morgan as the white-ball captain in July 2022, Buttler initially enjoyed success, leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022; however, the situation has deteriorated since then.

Under Buttler's leadership in 58 white-ball matches following their T20 World Cup triumph, England has suffered 32 losses, which includes a group-stage exit from the ODI World Cup in India in 2023, a semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup in 2024, and now the setback in the Champions Trophy.

While doubts regarding Buttler's captaincy began to surface after the ODI World Cup in 2023, they have intensified significantly following the recent Champions Trophy disappointment.

Buttler stated that he would refrain from making any decisions while his emotions were heightened, but he indicated that he would likely evaluate his future after discussions with the ECB's senior management in the coming days.

"The results are not meeting expectations, and I must contemplate all options. As I mentioned, we need to restore the team to the level that England cricket requires in the white-ball formats. I need to determine whether I am part of the problem or part of the solution," the England captain remarked following the eight-run defeat to Afghanistan in Lahore on Wednesday.

Buttler to take call on captaincy future after returning home

Buttler's recent batting performance has contributed to the challenges faced by the team. The dynamic right-handed batsman, regarded as one of England's finest white-ball cricketers, has recorded only one century in his last 58 matches across ODIs and T20Is.

"I want to emphasize that I will not make any hasty emotional decisions at this moment. You are likely not the first individuals I would consult regarding this matter. I intend to take some time to reflect on what I believe is the right course of action. The leadership at the top has their perspectives, and as I mentioned, our priority is to restore the team to a position where it is competitive in winning tournaments. I must also determine whether I am part of the solution," Buttler stated.

When questioned about the impact of captaincy on his physical and mental well-being, Buttler expressed that he has always viewed himself as a leader within the group, even in the absence of an official captaincy role.

"There have certainly been challenging moments. Many people may believe that the captaincy does not suit me, but I genuinely enjoy the role. I take pleasure in leading the team. Even before my captaincy, I considered myself a leader within the squad. However, the pressure of results can be significant, and it can be burdensome at times. Naturally, one aspires to lead a victorious team, and we have not achieved that for some time, which inevitably leads to challenging situations."
