The Madrid Open 2025 suffered a significant injury blow on Thursday when Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament. With the French Open just around the corner, his disclosure of his injury caused significant alarm.

Earlier this month, during the Barcelona Open final against Holger Rune, Alcaraz sustained an injury scare. After dominating the Spanish capital in 2022 and 2023, he first wanted to go back there, but medical examinations revealed a double injury setback. Alcaraz's participation in the Italian Open, which is set to begin in the first week of May, is still up in the air, according to Spanish media, despite the fact that the world's third-ranked player has not yet made a decision.

Alcaraz said in Madrid that, "I wanted to play here, but we've decided not to take any risks."

"As you all suspected, the physio came in to treat my abductor muscle for the Barcelona final since I haven't been able to train these days, but I also saw something else in my left leg. I took tests on Tuesday, and I met with my team to evaluate whether we could perform well in Madrid. We made every effort, but the situation didn't get any better.

"You must pay attention to your body. I always anticipate playing in Madrid. Although I put a lot of passion into this thrilling competition, things didn't turn out the way I wanted. Since I was going to be more than I anticipated, we ultimately decided to avoid any chances. I'm going to try to get some rest and recover so I can get back on the court as soon as I can.

As a seeded player, Alcaraz was given a bye into the second round of the Madrid Open, where he was scheduled to face the victor of the match between Zizou Bergs and Gabriel Diallo. The draw will now see Kamil Majchrzak, the Polish celebrity, take his spot.
