Alcaraz Reflects on VAR Controversy in Indian Wells Loss to Draper

Carlos Alcaraz faced a surprising defeat against Jack Draper in the men’s singles semi-finals at the Indian Wells Masters on Sunday, losing 1-6, 6-0, 4-6. This loss ended Alcaraz's impressive 16-match winning streak, as he struggled to find his rhythm throughout the match.
While Alcaraz made a strong comeback in the second set, winning it comfortably, he ultimately ran out of energy in the third set, leading to a frustrating loss.
The match also featured a controversial video review that got fans talking. In the third set, Draper was initially denied a point because the chair umpire believed the ball had bounced twice before he hit it. Draper requested a video review, and after some back and forth, the umpire decided to replay the point. However, Draper insisted on continuing with the review, and after a lengthy wait, the point was ultimately awarded to him.
Carlos Alcaraz shares his thoughts on the points controversy
Reflecting on the incident, Alcaraz mentioned, “Not really. I didn’t catch whether it was one bounce or two at the start, so I was just waiting for the review.”
When discussing the decision, he explained, “During the second review, Lahyani’s call came either in the middle of the point or right after I hit it, and I wasn’t completely sure. I didn’t hear anything while I was hitting the ball, so I didn’t feel confident enough to say anything.”
He continued, “Waiting for the ball reviews didn’t bother me at all. It felt pretty normal to go through the review process.”
This loss also dashed Alcaraz’s hopes of securing a third consecutive Indian Wells title and his second title of the year, following his victory at the Rotterdam Open last month.
After the match, Draper commented, “Honestly, it was a weird match. Carlos seemed a bit off at the start, and I noticed that. I had a chance in the first game of the second set, but he responded with an ace.”
He added, “I experienced something similar; I got tight and felt low on energy. I lost focus for about 25 minutes, but in the third set, I was really proud of my competitiveness and attitude, and I managed to pull through.”
