Akram Slams Abrar Ahmed's Celebration: 'Timing and Place Matter, Not Arrogance'

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram didn't hold back in criticizing Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed's send-off to Shubman Gill during the intense Champions Trophy match on Sunday. With high stakes in play, the two rivals faced off in Dubai, but the Indian team completely dominated Mohammad Rizwan and his squad, who struggled to put up any resistance and are now on the brink of elimination from the tournament.
In the midst of India's innings, Abrar Ahmed bowled a stunning delivery that sent Shubman Gill packing for 46 runs. Gill misjudged the spin and was left stunned, but Abrar's exuberant send-off didn't sit well with many, including some former Pakistani players. At the time of Gill's dismissal, India was cruising at 100/2 in just 17.3 overs.
While Akram praised the delivery that took Gill's wicket, he was critical of Abrar's celebration, feeling it was inappropriate given the match situation. He emphasized that there’s a right time and place for such displays.
“I was really impressed with the ball, but the celebration? Not so much. There’s a time and place for everything, my friend. If you’re winning, go ahead and celebrate. But when your team is struggling and you take a wicket, it’s better to show some humility. But that’s not happening. No one seems to be guiding him,” Akram shared with Sports Central.
He further pointed out that such celebrations are only warranted when a player has an extraordinary performance, like taking seven wickets for just a few runs.
“Celebration ruined everything. If you take seven wickets for five runs, then sure, celebrate. But this? It just doesn’t look good, even on TV,” Akram added regarding Abrar Ahmed's antics after dismissing Gill.
Virat Kohli is back in the groove with a century
Pakistan chose to bat first but struggled, getting all out for a disappointing 242 in this important match. Saud Shakeel was the lone bright spot for Pakistan, managing to score over 50 runs.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli found his rhythm again, smashing a brilliant century as India easily chased down the target in just 42.3 overs. Kohli made the chase look effortless, leading the Men in Blue to victory.
