Mumbai: The Indian selection committee will be fully present for the knockout stages of the Vijay Hazare Trophy ODIs in Vadodara, kicking off with the pre-quarter finals on Thursday. This gathering of the five selectors is important as chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who was the touring selector during the entire Australia tour, will update his team.
After getting input from the selection committee, Agarkar is set to meet with BCCI officials soon for a series review meeting, which will also include captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Additionally, the board's Special General Meeting (SGM) is happening in Mumbai on Sunday, where Devajit Saikia will take over as the new BCCI secretary.
The recent Australian tour, which followed a disappointing 0-3 loss at home to New Zealand, was supposed to determine the future of several senior players. The 3-1 defeat dashed India’s hopes for the WTC final, marking a significant setback. R Ashwin’s unexpected mid-tour retirement, whispers of team dissatisfaction, Rohit’s drop in form that led to him missing the final Test in Sydney, and Virat Kohli’s ongoing struggles have raised many questions for Indian cricket. These issues are likely to be discussed in various formal and informal meetings among selectors and administrators in the days ahead.
The selectors will soon be finalizing the squad for the upcoming white-ball series at home against England, which includes five T20s and three ODIs from January 22 to February 12, before they finalize the team for the ICC Champions Trophy starting next month.
