Agni Chopra, the offspring of director Vidhu Vinod Chopra and film journalist Anupama Chopra, has recently been honoured as the highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy Plate League. The accolade was presented to him by his "childhood idol," Rohit Sharma, during the BCCI's annual Naman Awards ceremony held in Mumbai on February 1.
In the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, Agni Chopra accumulated an impressive total of 939 runs, boasting an average exceeding 80. Following this achievement, he was photographed alongside cricket legends such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Sachin Tendulkar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Smriti Mandhana.
The 26-year-old expressed immense joy at receiving the award from Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian Test and ODI teams. Agni shared that he has long admired the 37-year-old cricketer, making the moment feel surreal.
"It was incredibly meaningful to receive this award from Rohit bhai, who hails from Mumbai and whom I have looked up to for many years," Agni remarked after the ceremony.
"I have been watching Rohit bhai play for nearly half my life, and it feels like a full-circle moment to be honoured by the Indian captain. Having my parents there to support me made the occasion even more special, as they have consistently stood by me, particularly during challenging times when I was not a regular member of the Mumbai team," he added.
Agni Chopra recalls father's priceless advice
Agni Chopra faced considerable challenges in securing a position within Mumbai's playing XI, prompting him to leave the city and pursue his cricketing ambitions in Mizoram.
He reflected on the invaluable guidance provided by his father, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, emphasizing the importance of striving for excellence in any profession.
"It is truly gratifying to have my efforts acknowledged, and receiving an award for the Ranji Trophy, a tournament with such a rich history, is exceptionally meaningful. I am thankful for this recognition," stated Agni Chopra.
With a clear focus, Agni Chopra aims to elevate Mizoram to the Elite Group through his performances, while also aspiring to earn a Test cap for India.
At the BCCI's annual Naman Awards, Sachin Tendulkar was presented with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, and Ravichandran Ashwin received special recognition for his significant contributions to Indian cricket.
