Shardul Thakur is poised to return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after remaining unsold at the 2025 auction, with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) expected to add him to their roster. According to a report from the Times of India, Shardul will replace left-arm fast bowler Mohsin Khan, who has been sidelined due to an ACL injury compounded by a calf strain.

While an official confirmation is still pending, the report indicates that Shardul has already been notified of the decision and will join the team in Visakhapatnam for their opening match against the Delhi Capitals.

His inclusion provides a much-needed reinforcement for an LSG bowling lineup struggling with injuries. The franchise has yet to assemble a fully fit group of fast bowlers, as several key Indian pacers are still in recovery at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).

Avesh Khan has not rejoined the squad since recovering from a knee injury, while Akash Deep and Mayank Yadav are still at the CoE.

Mayank, in particular, has faced a challenging period of injuries, which has kept him from participating in any competitive matches since October of the previous year.

The rehabilitation process for the 22-year-old has encountered numerous challenges, including a side strain, a hamstring issue, a left-side back injury, and now a complication on the right side. Although he has begun bowling at a lower intensity in the nets, his overall match fitness is still a significant concern.

Additionally, the report indicates that even if Mayank receives approval from the Center of Excellence to join the IPL team, managing the demands of a full tournament would be a considerable challenge.

LSG mentor Zaheer Khan recognized the uncertainty regarding the squad's fast-bowling options and suggested a flexible strategy for the upcoming season.

"The circumstances for some of our players are fluid due to injuries. However, it is essential to focus on the positives and adapt our approach to address the situation effectively. Some players are currently at the National Cricket Academy, while others are working with their physiotherapists. At this moment, it would be premature to make any definitive statements. The situation will continue to evolve throughout the season," Zaheer remarked during a media briefing.
