Abhishek’s Blaze: 141 Reasons SRH Roared to Victory
4 days ago | 5 Views
Mumbai: Abhishek Sharma, the opener for Sunrisers Hyderabad, had a modest highest score of 24 in the first five matches of this IPL season, following his impressive performance last season. However, he silenced any skepticism regarding his batting skills with a remarkable innings, scoring 141 runs and leading SRH to an emphatic eight-wicket victory at home against Punjab Kings.
Sharma's innings featured 14 fours and 10 sixes, achieved in just 55 balls, as he accomplished the second-highest chase in IPL history in a swift 18.3 overs. His score ranks as the third highest ever recorded in the league.
Despite Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer's explosive 82 runs off 36 balls and Marcus Stoinis's remarkable finish with four sixes in the final four deliveries, which set a challenging target of 245/6, their efforts were overshadowed by Sharma's brilliance at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
The young left-handed opener completed his century by nudging Yuzvendra Chahal's final delivery of the 13th over to wide long-on for a single. In celebration, he raised his bat to the crowd, removed his helmet, and displayed a piece of paper from his pocket to the audience throughout the stadium.
On a pitch conducive to high scoring, Sharma was unstoppable. He struck three additional sixes in the 15th and 16th overs, reducing the target to 28 runs needed from 24 balls. Ultimately, he was dismissed for 141 after being caught in the deep, receiving a standing ovation as he left the field.
This victory not only showcased SRH's batting strength but also ended a streak of four consecutive losses. For Punjab Kings, it marked their second defeat in five matches.
The importance of a strong start in T20 cricket cannot be overstated, and SRH exemplifies this principle. Last season, when openers Head and Abhishek were dominating bowlers, they became the most feared team, which was reflected in their successful playoff run, ultimately finishing as runners-up.
This season, the brilliance that Head and Abhishek typically bring to the game has been absent, resulting in SRH experiencing their worst start in IPL history, with four consecutive losses that have left them at the bottom of the standings. Their most notable performance prior to Saturday was a 45-run partnership in 3.1 overs during the opening match against Rajasthan Royals.
On Saturday, batting first, PBKS reminded the hosts of their own successful strategy by quickly reaching 89/1 within six overs. Iyer capitalized on the solid foundation laid by openers Prabhsimran Singh and Pratyush Arya, who contributed 66 runs in just four overs, enabling PBKS to finish with a total of 245/6 after choosing to bat.
While the impressive start by Arya and Prabhsimran was a source of frustration for the SRH players, it appeared to ignite a spark in Head and Abhishek, reminding them of their effective partnership from the previous season.
After a series of disappointing opening partnerships, the two came out aggressively. They forged a remarkable 171-run partnership in 12.2 overs, setting the stage for a memorable victory. The pair propelled SRH to 83/0 in six overs, matching PBKS's initial performance. Abhishek reached his fifty in just 20 balls, while Head provided solid support with 28 runs off 19 balls. When Head was dismissed for 66 runs off 37 balls, SRH required 75 runs from 46 balls. To the delight of the home crowd, Abhishek achieved his century in 40 balls, hitting 11 fours and 6 sixes.
Earlier in the match, SRH had a disastrous start, as all three pacers used during the powerplay conceded over 20 runs each in just two overs. Mohammed Shami had the most challenging outing, finishing with figures of 4 overs, 75 runs, and no wickets, marking the second most expensive bowling spell in IPL history.
