MUMBAI: One of the concerns regarding young players participating in the IPL is the risk of becoming overwhelmed by the heightened attention that comes with early success and fame. It is often easy to discern who is playing for personal glory and who is prioritizing the team. Given the substantial financial stakes involved, fostering a team-first mentality among players is undoubtedly challenging.

A player like Abhishek Sharma is certainly captivating. His dynamic batting style can lead fans to crave more of his performances. It is crucial for him to maintain his competitive spirit and not be swayed by the adoration he receives.

However, on Saturday, the 24-year-old silenced any doubts by delivering a spectacular century against the Punjab Kings in front of Sunrisers Hyderabad supporters at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. By aiding his team in reaching a daunting target of 246, he showcased his exceptional talent.

Abhishek is fortunate to have the guidance of such a prominent former Indian all-rounder who can assist him in honing his skills and provide mentorship. Few can rival Yuvraj's fame, being a hero of the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup. Yuvraj understands the challenges that come with fame and knows how to keep a young cricketer grounded and focused. It was no surprise that following the victory over Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings, Abhishek acknowledged the support of mentor Yuvraj Singh and India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav during his challenging times.

Abhishek Sharma expressed his gratitude during the post-match presentation, stating, "I would like to give special recognition to Yuvraj Paaji, as I have been in communication with him. I also acknowledge Mr. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been supportive and aware that this achievement was imminent, so I appreciate his encouragement as well."

Regarding Yuvraj, the mentor was impressed by the composure Abhishek displayed during his innings, particularly when he strategically took two singles to reach his century. While the left-handed batsman is known for his powerful hitting, Yuvraj has consistently emphasized the importance of versatility and the value of accumulating singles in their training sessions.

Yuvraj praised Abhishek's performance on X, saying, "Wah Sharma ji ke bete! A single at 98, then another at 99! Such maturity; we can't match that! Great innings, Abhishek Sharma. Well played, Travis Head." He also commended the opening pair, stating, "These openers are a delight to watch together. Well played, Shreyas Iyer, a pleasure to observe as well." In a previous message, Yuvraj had encouraged the young player from Punjab to incorporate singles into his game, writing, "Sir Abhishek, I hope you take as many singles this year as you hit out of the park."

Upon reaching his first IPL century, he celebrated by revealing a handwritten note from his pocket, which read, "This one is for the Orange Army (SRH’s fans)."

"I wrote it today," Abhishek shared about the note, "because I typically wake up and jot down my thoughts. I had a spontaneous idea that if I accomplished something today, it would be for the Orange Army. Fortunately, I felt today was my day."
