1 month ago | 5 Views
Abhishek Sharma put on a show of raw power as he took apart the England bowlers during the fifth and final T20I at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The left-handed batsman capitalized on the powerplay overs, giving India a fantastic start after England's captain, Jos Buttler, chose to bowl first. Abhishek reached his century in just 37 balls, leaving the English team stunned.
Thanks to this incredible performance, Abhishek Sharma now holds the record for the second-fastest century by an Indian in T20Is, just behind Rohit Sharma, who scored a century in 35 balls against Sri Lanka in 2017.
He also set a new record for the highest T20I score by an Indian batter, surpassing Shubman Gill's 126 runs against New Zealand in 2023. Abhishek's innings ended at 135 runs off 54 balls when he was finally out, bowled by Adil Rashid.
Thanks to Abhishek's explosive batting, India finished their innings with a massive total of 247/9 in 20 overs.
Sanju Samson previously held the record for the second-fastest T20I century, hitting 100 runs off just 40 balls against Bangladesh at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Before that, Abhishek Sharma made waves by scoring the second-fastest fifty for an Indian in T20Is, beating KL Rahul's record of 50 runs off 18 balls against Scotland in Dubai.
The title for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian goes to Yuvraj Singh, who blasted 50 runs off only 12 balls during the first T20 World Cup against England. The overall record is held by Nepal's Dipendra Singh Airee, who achieved 50 runs off just 9 balls.
In the match, Sanju Samson was out for 16 runs in the second over. But Abhishek Sharma kept the momentum going, showing great skill against the pace of Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton.
Throughout the series, Abhishek Sharma faced Jofra Archer 32 times, racking up 60 runs with an impressive strike rate of 187.40.
One of the standout moments of his innings was when Abhishek Sharma charged down the pitch against the fast deliveries from Archer and Mark Wood.
Sanju Samson gets out early
Sanju Samson kicked off the match with a bang, launching the very first ball for a six by pulling a bouncer from Jofra Archer. Unfortunately, his innings ended just like in his previous outings—caught in the deep off Mark Wood's bowling.
He headed back to the pavilion after scoring 16 runs. Throughout the series, he only managed to rack up 35 runs from 29 balls that were bowled to him. All five times he got out followed the same pattern.
Earlier, England's captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first. They made one change, bringing in Mark Wood to replace Saqib Mahood.
On India's side, Mohammed Shami came in for Arshdeep Singh.
India has already clinched the series, making the fifth T20I in Mumbai a formality.
