AB de Villiers Suggests Return at Age 40, Yet Excludes RCB: 'Averse to Experiencing That Pressure Again'

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, renowned for his dynamic playing style, has expressed a desire to return to cricket, albeit in a more relaxed environment, distinct from the pressures associated with professional leagues such as the IPL or SA20. In a frank discussion with Melinda Farrell on her YouTube channel, the 40-year-old batting legend revealed that his children have been encouraging him to practice in the nets.

"I might still play cricket one day. No confirmation whatsoever. My kids are putting me under a bit of pressure, and I feel like I could go to the nets with them," de Villiers stated, referring to his three children—Abraham, John, and Yente.

Having retired from all forms of cricket in November 2021 to focus on family, de Villiers hinted at the possibility of returning to the field, emphasizing that it would be solely for enjoyment. "My boy could feel me bowling machine balls... maybe I will walk out and play a bit of casual cricket somewhere," he remarked.

While de Villiers remains engaged in the cricketing community as the brand ambassador for the ongoing SA20 and through his charitable and broadcasting endeavors, he appears eager to revisit a more leisurely aspect of his cricketing enthusiasm.

"I am speaking more seriously about playing some real cricket—not the professional IPL or SA20 stuff—but who knows? I have had my fair share of high-pressure cricket; that's behind me," he noted.

Nonetheless, this aspiration is not without its challenges. De Villiers openly acknowledged difficulties with his eyesight, particularly in his left eye. "This right one is the dominant one; it is working fine. I am doing it for my kids and seeing if I can go out there and enjoy cricket again, even if it is very casual, and see where we draw the line."

Not RCB, don't want to feel pressure again

Although he has dismissed the possibility of returning to the IPL or rejoining his cherished Royal Challengers Bengaluru, de Villiers expresses a keen interest in engaging with cricket on his own terms. "We are not discussing RCB or similar matters. I wish to avoid that pressure once more. Wherever I go, I aim to enjoy myself," he stated.

Renowned as ‘Mr. 360’ for his remarkable batting skills, de Villiers boasts a legacy that includes over 20,000 runs in international cricket, along with records for the fastest 50, 100, and 150 in One Day Internationals. His potential involvement, even in a more relaxed role, would certainly bring joy to fans around the globe.
