AB de Villiers Backs Rohit Sharma: Calls Him One of the ‘Best Captains’, Questions Retirement Talks
7 days ago | 5 Views
Four days following India's triumph in the Champions Trophy, where they defeated New Zealand in the final held in Dubai, discussions regarding captain Rohit Sharma's future continue to persist. This comes after Rohit publicly declared his intention to remain active in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and urged others to cease the circulation of rumours about his retirement. Legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers expressed his full support for Rohit's decision to continue participating in the 50-over format, emphasizing that Rohit's impressive record as captain speaks volumes.
Rohit boasts the highest win percentage among all ODI captains and has now become only the second Indian captain to secure multiple ICC titles, having previously led India to victory in the T20 World Cup last year before achieving success in the Champions Trophy.
"Rohit's win percentage is nearly 74%, which significantly surpasses that of any other captain in history. If he maintains this trajectory, he will undoubtedly be regarded as one of the greatest ODI captains ever. Rohit has reiterated that he is not retiring and has asked for the rumours to cease," de Villiers remarked on his YouTube channel.
"Why would he consider retirement? His record is exceptional, both as a captain and as a batsman. His innings of 76 runs off 83 balls in the final provided India with a remarkable start, establishing a solid foundation for their success and demonstrating leadership under pressure," de Villiers added.
‘Rohit has transformed his batting; no reason to retire’: de Villiers
De Villiers expressed that Rohit Sharma's evolution as a player over the past few years eliminates any justification for him to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs). His aggressive batting during the initial overs significantly energizes the Indian innings.
"Rohit Sharma has no reason to consider retirement or to heed any criticism. His statistics are a testament to his abilities. Furthermore, he has notably evolved his playing style. Previously, his strike rate during the powerplay was relatively low for an opening batsman, but since 2022, it has increased to 115 in the first powerplay, marking a distinction between a good player and a great one. This transformation in his game is ongoing; there is always room for improvement and learning," he remarked.
The former South African captain also emphasized that Rohit deserves recognition for overcoming his struggles in Test cricket to deliver match-winning performances in ODIs. Rohit ascended to the third position in the ICC ODI rankings following his Player of the Match performance in the Champions Trophy final.
"As an Indian supporter, one should take pride in his achievements. His journey has not always been smooth, with fluctuating forms across different formats. However, in crucial moments and significant matches, he consistently steps up to lead," de Villiers concluded.
