A Dark Day for Pakistani Cricket: Former Star Criticizes Rizwan and Teammates for Prioritizing Money

Pakistan's disappointing tour of New Zealand concluded on a sour note, suffering a 43-run loss in the third and final ODI at Eden Park. This prompted former cricketer Basit Ali to express his outrage regarding the team's performance, leadership, and overall mentality.

The match was shortened to 42 overs per side due to a wet outfield, with New Zealand scoring 264/8, bolstered by half-centuries from Rhys Mariu (58) and Michael Bracewell (59), along with a significant contribution from Daryl Mitchell, who surpassed the 2,000-run milestone in ODIs. Ben Sears dismantled Pakistan's batting lineup, achieving figures of 5/34, as the visitors were all out for 221 despite a strong start.

Pakistan's pursuit was hindered by an early injury to opener Imam-ul-Haq, who had to retire after being struck on the helmet grill by a throw in the third over. Although there were solid middle-order performances from Babar Azam (who scored a half-century), Abdullah Shafique (33), and Mohammad Rizwan (37), the team faltered in the closing stages.

Basit Ali reacted vehemently to the team's display, labeling the day as "the black day in Pakistan cricket" on his YouTube channel. He remarked:

"In my view, today marks a dark day for Pakistan cricket, even for those who have left the sport. When Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis bowled, New Zealand's batsmen struggled to move their feet. Now, they are in commentary, criticizing us. They laughed at us when Pakistan sent Usman Khan as a concussion substitute," Basit stated.

The former player did not shy away from criticizing Mohammad Rizwan's captaincy, questioning his tactical awareness and decision-making during crucial moments.

"Where was Rizwan when Imam left the field? His captaincy was so poor; he doesn't even know which bowlers to use at what times. It resembles school cricket," he asserted.

Major claim

Basit voiced his disappointment regarding Imam-ul-Haq’s choice to exit the field following his injury, suggesting it was a move driven by self-preservation.

"Imam appeared frightened after the impact and chose to leave the game. His primary concern seemed to be his own safety. Does he believe we are unaware? All these players are motivated by financial gain. This is the unfortunate reality of Pakistan cricket. There is no one available to take their place. Even if you miss one series, you can easily return for the next.”

Pakistan concluded their tour with a 4-1 defeat in the T20I series and a 3-0 sweep in the ODIs, a result that has left both fans and former players feeling profoundly disheartened.
