"A Captain Doesn't Opt Out": Mark Taylor Claims Rohit Sharma Has Been Dropped

7 days ago | 5 Views

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has chosen to withdraw from the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, following a series of disappointing performances. The 37-year-old has accumulated only 31 runs in five innings during the last three Tests and has struggled to regain his form, with even his signature shots, such as the front foot pull, appearing ineffective.

This decision prompts renewed speculation regarding his future in Test cricket, particularly as his difficulties have mirrored India's overall challenges in the series. Rohit's choice to step back was made after considerable reflection; however, former Australian cricketer Mark Taylor expressed skepticism about Rohit's autonomy in this decision.

Taylor contends that Rohit was effectively "dropped" and voiced his astonishment that this terminology was not used to describe his exclusion from the playing XI.

“To be honest, that is sidestepping the point. The bottom line is, the captain of a country doesn't opt out for the final Test, the deciding Test match of the series. It's no doubt he has been dropped; I don't know why they just don't say he has been dropped,” Taylor remarked on Triple M Cricket.

“It doesn't mean he has been dropped forever. It just means he is missing this Test match because he is out of form, that's not a problem. That's unfortunately professional sports, and Shubman Gill comes back in.”

Bumrah on Rohit

Jasprit Bumrah, who has previously assumed captaincy during Rohit's paternity leave, has taken on the leadership role for this match.

During the toss, Bumrah addressed the circumstances, stating, “Our captain has demonstrated leadership and has chosen to take a break.” He further highlighted the strong bond within the Indian team, remarking, “It reflects the unity we possess as a team.”

With the series at a critical juncture, Bumrah is tasked with the challenge of guiding India towards a victory that would level the series and aid in retaining the trophy. Although Rohit's absence intensifies the pressure, it simultaneously offers the team a chance to regroup and concentrate on achieving success in the final Test.
