Former Indian all-rounder Kirti Azad has come to the support of Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who is currently under intense scrutiny following India's recent defeat in Adelaide during the ongoing Test series against Australia. After suffering his fourth consecutive loss as captain, fans on social media have begun to question Rohit’s position in the team, particularly as he has struggled with his batting, failing to score in double digits in both innings of the second Test.

Azad views this reaction as characteristic of Indian cricket fans, who frequently call for significant changes after a few disappointing results.

“It’s quite peculiar in our country; if someone performs poorly, they should be replaced. If a team loses, then the captaincy should be reassessed. The issue lies with 1.4 billion people, as they watch on television where everyone considers themselves an expert,” Azad stated, as reported by News18.

Despite the backlash, Azad maintains his faith in Rohit’s leadership and asserts that such unwarranted pressure is an inherent aspect of playing for India. Regarding the team's overall performance, Azad expressed hope for India's recovery, noting that they can still make a comeback. India suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide after previously defeating Australia by 295 runs in the first Test held in Perth.

“The only player absent from this team is Mohammed Shami. If Mohammad Shami were present alongside Bumrah, it would create a highly effective and formidable bowling attack,” Azad remarked, highlighting the impact of the experienced pacer’s absence.

A ‘surrender’

Azad expressed his thoughts on India's disappointing performance in Adelaide, indicating that the loss could be characterized more as a "surrender" rather than a triumph for Australia. He stated, "The second Test represented more of a surrender by India than a victory for Australia," recognizing Australia's tenacity.

"They are renowned for their ability to stage comebacks. Thus, they are a formidable opponent, and we must strive to overcome them in Gabba," Azad commented. He maintained his optimism that the Indian team can regroup and present a formidable challenge in the forthcoming Tests.
