Prajwal Devaraj's inaugural venture into the horror genre, titled Rakshasa, is helmed by Lohith H, a director recognized for his previous works in this category, including Mummy Save Me and Devaki. Originally scheduled for a theatrical release on February 28, the film's debut was unexpectedly delayed due to 'technical difficulties,' although industry insiders have suggested that unresolved financial obligations may have played a role.

In this film, Prajwal reprises his role as a police officer, but faces a formidable adversary in the form of a Brahmarakshasa, a demonic entity that has been captured and confined within an element, ultimately ending up in a police station's evidence locker. When this Brahmarakshasa is accidentally released, it unleashes chaos, forcing the officer into a frantic race against time to protect his family. Notably, Lohith has incorporated a time-loop element into the narrative, adding a unique twist to the story.

Rakshasa connects to Mummy Save Me

Prajwal draws a connection between Rakshasa and Mummy Save Me, stating that he chose to participate in this project despite his unfamiliarity with the horror genre, due to his strong faith in Lohith's capability to manage such a theme. The two had been collaborating on another project, Mafia, which has yet to be released, when Lohith introduced the concept of Rakshasa to Prajwal. The originality of the storyline resonated with Prajwal's desire to explore new-age and experimental cinema, moving away from the conventional mass commercial films that have characterized his recent work.

The actor explains that his previous reluctance to engage with the horror genre stemmed from a lack of appreciation for the idea of paying to experience fear. However, Rakshasa distinguishes itself by not merely relying on jump scares; it also incorporates elements of thriller. Prajwal emphasizes that Lohith is a director who has achieved success with multiple films in this genre, making Rakshasa a project well within his expertise.

“Lohith has interwoven Rakshasa with themes from his earlier films, which will become apparent upon viewing. A doll featured in Mummy Save Me plays a crucial role in Rakshasa, and the police character has ties to another of Lohith's films. He is effectively crafting his own cinematic universe – the LCU,” Prajwal remarked during his discussion with K.
