Season 5 of You is set to premiere in the coming months, preparing audiences for the chilling conclusion of Joe Goldberg's narrative. As indicated by the teaser narrated by Joe and the foreboding imagery, the final season of this thriller will launch on April 24, featuring all ten episodes.

Netflix has unveiled a new teaser for the eagerly awaited fifth and final season. During Netflix's Next on Netflix event, Penn Badgley's character, Joe, poignantly states, "Goodbye, You." Although Joe returns to New York, his past swiftly catches up with him.

His seemingly perfect existence is jeopardized by the spectres of his past and his own sinister inclinations, as indicated by the logline.

Penn Badgley shared with Tudum during filming in New York in July that each season introduces a fresh and relevant perspective. He believes that this season's return to its foundational elements has contributed to a grounded narrative, ultimately leading to an exceptional finale.

Joe's evolution throughout the seasons

Joe, the central character of You—a series inspired by Caroline Kepnes's novels—embodies the archetype of a hopeless romantic with a penchant for literature and a propensity for violence. He professes his love for several women, yet he resorts to murder to eliminate any obstacles in his path. Joe's pursuit of love began in New York, transitioned to Los Angeles in Season 2, moved to the oppressive suburbs of San Francisco in Season 3, and most recently, unfolded in London during the newly released fourth season. He was ultimately compelled to confront the undeniable reality that he is not a good man—an acknowledgement he had long evaded—while navigating a genre-blending narrative across the Atlantic. Following the season's conclusion, Joe returns to New York City with his affluent partner Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, she/her) and a precarious new perspective on life, which Badgley is eager to explore, as Joe has finally recognized the fundamental immorality of his previous lifestyle.

In the fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg returns to New York, seeking his happily ever after, yet he is confronted by challenges stemming from his past and his own dark aspirations, ultimately putting his ideal life at risk.

Showrunner and executive producer Michael Foley shared with Tudum that they had always intended to conclude the series after five seasons, envisioning a scenario where Joe would return to New York. Alongside executive producer Justin W. Lo, Foley expressed their excitement about Joe's return, noting the significant transformation he has undergone since Season 1. This juxtaposition of his former and current selves is crucial to the concluding narrative of Joe.

As new characters are introduced, Joe meets a young woman, portrayed by Madeline Brewer, who prompts him to reevaluate his privileged existence. Throughout the season, he also faces challenges from his wife Kate's siblings.

With Badgley and Ritchie already part of the cast, Brewer joins as the enigmatic and self-sufficient playwright Bront, who takes a position at Joe's new bookstore. As Joe develops a connection with Bront over shared literary interests and personal grief, he begins to question the trajectory of his life, stirred by nostalgia for his former self.

Griffin Matthews takes on the role of Teddy Lockwood, Joe's sardonic and loyal brother-in-law. Although he was never fully embraced by the Lockwood family, Teddy serves as a trusted confidant, guiding them in recognizing the importance of authenticity and empathy.

Anna Camp skillfully navigates dual roles as Joe's identical twin sisters-in-law, Raegan and Maddie Lockwood. Raegan, the cunning and ruthless chief financial officer of Lockwood Corp, is fiercely ambitious and determined to eliminate her rivals. In contrast, Maddie, a socialite with three divorces to her name and a job description of "vaguely PR," embodies the carefree twin. However, beneath Maddie's seemingly frivolous exterior lies a highly skilled manipulator.

Badgley noted that Joe's past is filled with unresolved issues, as the film features clips of various individuals whom Joe has harmed throughout the previous four seasons. Among these are John Stamos' Dr. Nicky, Jenna Ortega's orphaned Ellie, Shalita Grant, and Travis Van Winkle's affluent Conrads from Season 1. However, Badgley is unable to disclose which of Joe's victims survived Season 5 at this time.
