Pitch Perfect and Trolls star Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut is headed to OTT shortly. Woman of the Hour, which has Kendrick in the lead as a dating game contestant, who has an unpleasant tryst with a serial killer – later identified as the Dating Game serial killer Rodney Alcala – is coming to Netflix on October 18, ahead of which a new trailer dropped moments ago.
The true story behind Woman of the Hour
In the trailer, Dating Game contestant Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick) is seen asking the three eligible bachelors on the episode, ‘What are girls for?’. One of the three men, as will be later revealed, was Rodney Alcala, the winner of the Dating Game, whose big prize was a date with Bradshaw. Alcala, though, came across as creepy, which made Bradshaw uncomfortable during the course of their date, which she then chooses to end.
Woman of the Hour OTT release date: When and where to watch Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut
In an earlier released teaser trailer, Bradshaw is seen being caught out for giving Alcala a wrong phone number. Her rejection of Alcala is said to have been the driving force for several of his murders thereafter. Alcala met Bradshaw in 1978, although, he’d begun his murder spree in the late 60s. He was eventually apprehended in 79 and convicted for the murders of 5 women between 77 and 79.
At the time of his arrest, Alcala had in his possession over a thousand pictures of women, boys and girls in sexually explicit poses, most of who are believed to have been his victims. Investigations linked him to at least 8 murders, with his actual body count believed to be closer to 130.
Daniel Zovatto plays Alcalla in the film that also has Nicolette Robinson, Tony Hale, Kathryn Gallagher, Kelley Jakle, Autumn Best, Jessie Fraser, Taylor Hastings, Jedidiah Goodacre and Darcy Laurie, on its cast. Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Woman of the Hour opened to immensely positive reviews, with Kendrick’s deft handling of the subject a key highlight.
