Wish is helmed by Oscar-winning director Chris Buck of the Frozen franchise and Fawn Veerasunthorn of Raya and the Last Dragon. The film began development way back in 2018 but was not revealed until 2022. The film is based on a common theme of most Disney films: wishes coming true.

The film was released in theatres in November 2023 and had done moderately well at box office, inviting a mixed bag of reviews from the critics. Nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film, Wish will release on its home platform Disney+hotstar on April 3, 2024. The film’s trailer offers an insightful glimpse of the magical adventure that lies ahead.

Wish plot and what to expect

Wish’s art style is a creative blend of watercolor illustration, CGI animation and an overall look of upgraded 2D animation as a tribute to all the Disney animated films that came before it. The film follows an epic adventure in Rosas, a fictional kingdom on an island in the Mediterranean Sea founded by its King Magnifico and his wife Amaya. Since Magnifico is a powerful sorcerer, he can grant anyone’s wishes and desires.

So, each month, he picks a wish of a random citizen and fulfills it. Protagonist Asha, a 17-year-old sorcery aspirant who has got an interview with the King to be his assistant. But when the interview grows awry and Asha senses a growing darkness within the kingdom along with something ‘off’ about the king, she makes an ardent wish to the stars, not knowing that a particular one had heeded her call.

When Star, an adorable, anthropomorphic ball of energy descends to help Asha’s wish come true, Magnifico feels threatened and turns to the dark arts. While Star and Asha are fulfilling wishes, giving the power of speech to spunky animals, and trying to rescue the people from the King’s control, Magnifico is preparing to fight the battle of his life and to fulfill his greatest wish of all.
