The world of Hellboy has been growing for decades now, and in the last two decades, we have seen three actors portray the anti-hero in various films. Inspired by the comics created by Mike Mignola, these films have been highly anticipated over the years. Guillermo del Toro, the legendary filmmaker, began Hellboy’s on-screen journey with his 2004 film, and the legacy continues. While Hellboy: The Crooked Man, starring Jack Kesy, moves closer to its release, fans have long been curious if Guillermo del Toro’s planned third installment of the franchise will ever happen. Unfortunately, Mignola has now provided an answer, and it is heartbreaking for fans who have been waiting all this time.
Will Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy 3 Happen?
Mike Mignola has now opened up about what exactly happened between him and Guillermo del Toro, and whether Hellboy 3 will ever come to fruition. In case you don’t recall, del Toro was on the verge of creating Hellboy 3 with Ron Perlman when the rights to the property shifted elsewhere. This led to the plans for the third installment being put on hold and, eventually, shelved. Now, in his reaction to the situation, Mike Mignola discusses whether there is any future for the project. Read on to know more.
According to Screen Rant, Mike Mignola, while promoting his documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, commented on Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy 3: “In the documentary—and I’m very glad we did this—you do see our clash, and then there's just enough in the documentary to say, ‘Yeah, but they don't hate each other still.’ I just think there was a period where we intersected, and then we both kept going in our own directions. I think we certainly appreciate what the other guy is doing. I do think [del Toro] appreciates that I didn't cling to his heels and try to make a career in film. So many people in comics so desperately want to be working in film, and so many people [are] doing their own comics [as] a pitch for a TV show or a movie.”
He added, “I just love drawing comics. I remember [del Toro] asking, ‘What are you going to do now?’ I went, ‘I'm going to go back and draw comics,’ and I think he was relieved [by that] as opposed to [me saying], ‘I don't know, what are you going to do next? What are we going to do next together?’ It was a great experience working with him, but at the end of the day, I know what I do, and I'm not a film guy.”
