Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel and storyline

The story picks up more than 30 years after the original film and follows mother Lydia Deetz as she tries to heal her family after a tragedy while Betelgeuse keeps coming back to haunt her.

Beetlejuice has made his return! Following an unforeseen family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family arrive in Winter River. Astrid, the rebellious teenage daughter of Lydia, discovers a mysterious town model in the attic, which inadvertently opens a portal to the afterlife. This event disrupts Lydia's life, which continues to be haunted by Beetlejuice. As complications arise in both realms, the mischievous demon Beetlejuice is poised to unleash his distinctive brand of chaos as soon as his name is spoken three times.

Film festival debut and box office triumph

On August 28, 2024, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had its premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The film was subsequently released in theatres on September 6, 2024, grossing $451.9 million worldwide and receiving positive reviews from critics.

Character highlights

The monstrous "bio-exorcist" Betelgeuse, portrayed by Michael Keaton, has aspirations of marrying a human. Tim Burton emphasized the significance of Betelgeuse's static nature, believing there was no need for character development, while Keaton appreciated the character's politically incorrect traits and chose to maintain that essence.

Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, now a mother to Astrid Deetz and host of the Ghost House talk show. Lydia, characterized as a gothic figure, nearly faced an unwanted marriage to Betelgeuse. Ryder expressed her satisfaction with her character's growth, particularly in her relationship with her daughter Astrid, contrasting with her initial portrayal as a reclusive spinster residing in the attic of the Maitland house.

Delia Deetz, portrayed by Catherine O'Hara, is the stepmother of Lydia, Astrid, and Charles Deetz, and she is the widow of Charles. Currently, she serves as the hostess of a contemporary art exhibition at a gallery located in SoHo. Astrid Deetz, a teenager played by Jenna Ortega, is Delia's step-granddaughter and Lydia's sibling.

Rory, a television producer and Lydia's current partner is played by Justin Theroux. Willem Dafoe takes on the role of Wolf Jackson, a detective in the Underworld who was previously a B movie action hero before meeting his demise due to a live grenade. Additionally, Delores LaFerve, an enigmatic and soul-sucking occultist portrayed by Monica Bellucci, is known as Betelgeuse's ex-wife. She had poisoned him during the Black Plague centuries ago, leading to his revenge when he killed her with an axe.
