What Does 'Nonce' Really Mean? UK Slang Term Unpacked for Gen Z
2 days ago | 5 Views
Since its debut on Netflix on March 13, the miniseries Adolescence has enthralled viewers with its gripping and emotionally charged narrative, which is both challenging to witness and impossible to turn away from. As the series approaches its heart-wrenching finale, the last episode revolves around a British slang term that may be unfamiliar to many American audiences, yet is essential for unravelling the storyline.
What does the term ‘Nonce’ signify?
The four-part miniseries Adolescence begins with the arrest of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is accused of murdering his classmate, Katie Leonard. Each episode unfolds in real-time, spanning a single hour over the 13 months following the incident. In the concluding episode, Jamie's family struggles to cope with their transformed reality. Eddie Miller (portrayed by Stephen Graham), Jamie's father, starts his day in high spirits, looking forward to celebrating his birthday.
However, his fleeting happiness is quickly overshadowed when his daughter, Lisa (Amelie Pease), spots the word "none" spray-painted on the side of Eddie's van. The misspelling suggests that a younger person may have been behind the vandalism.
In its most basic sense, the term ‘nonce’ is a British slang expression that refers to a “paedophile.” According to the Cambridge Dictionary, it is defined as “a person who commits a crime involving sex, especially with a child.”
What does nonce mean in the native language?
Emmeline Armitage, a native of Yorkshire, shared with Today.com that the significance of the term has evolved over time. She noted that it is often linked to specific forms of British humour, particularly from television shows that aired around 10 to 15 years ago. As an illustration, she referenced "The Inbetweeners," a series about teenage boys that was broadcast from 2008 to 2020, where the term was frequently used.
Armitage remarked that the term "definitely had less significance at one point," adding, "However, I am curious if it now holds more significance in a culture where individuals are increasingly conscious of their language."
The community appears to place blame on Eddie and the circumstances surrounding Jamie's upbringing, with the graffiti representing the stigma attached to the Miller family. While Jamie's guilt is evident—his actions captured on video in the premiere episode—the more pressing question remains: what motivated him to kill Katie? Creator Stephen Graham explained to Rolling Stone that he often finds himself, like many others, attributing blame to the parents when such incidents occur in the news. Nevertheless, with "Adolescence," he aimed to craft a story that does not assign blame to the parents.
