Anubhav Sinha’s recent web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is currently tangled in a few controversies. Starring Vijay Varma in the lead role, the Netflix series garnered critical acclaim for its well-crafted plot and performances. However, the makers are now facing flak for distorting facts and hurting sentiments. A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court by the president of Hindu Sena, seeking a ban on the series. Here’s all you need to know about the row.

Who filed complaint against IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

According to the reports, a farmer and president of Hindu Sena, Surjit Singh Yadav, filed a PIL against the makers of the web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack on Monday. The complainant has urged the Centre and Maharashtra government to ban the series that recently premiered on Netflix.

For the unversed, the PIL was filed over allegations of distorting facts about the identity of hijackers and portraying them in a different light. The court plea allegedly claimed that the web series, based on the Kandahar plane hijack, distorted facts by erroneously showing the real identities of hijackers with Hindu names. In the miniseries, the makers have changed the names of the real hijackers, who were Muslim terrorists, and instead showed the fictionalized version with names such as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar.’ This hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community, calling for the ban of the series as these are the other names of Lord Shiva, as per the petition.

The petition also requested to cancel the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certification and ban it for OTT consumption.

“The distortion of crucial facts about the real identities of the hijackers not only misrepresents historical events but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and misinformation, warranting interference of this court to prevent further public misunderstanding and potential harm,” the petition read.

Meanwhile, Netflix India’s content head on Tuesday held talks with the central government, as per reports.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is based on the 1999 hijack of an Indian Airlines flight that lasted over a week. The hijack was conducted by a group of Pakistani terrorists. The web series released on Netflix India on August 29.
