2023 turned out to be an incredible year for Bollywood, featuring a variety of hit films that appealed to different audiences. One standout was 12th Fail, which unexpectedly topped the box office thanks to its engaging story and outstanding performances. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film showcased Vikrant Massey in what many are calling his best role yet, earning him a lot of praise. Some fans even think he might snag a National Award for his performance. But here’s a twist: Vikrant Massey wasn’t the original pick for the part. The filmmakers had Varun Dhawan in mind at first.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's choice to exclude Varun Dhawan has raised curiosity.

In the new documentary Zero Se Restart, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Jaskunwar Singh Kohli take us behind the scenes of the film 12th Fail. They share engaging stories and personal anecdotes that highlight the filmmaking journey. The documentary covers everything from in-depth research to funny moments on set, like VVC sending cute videos to his family.

One interesting tidbit is the casting challenge they faced. According to Zero Se Restart, Varun Dhawan was initially in the running for the role of Manoj. While many team members were on board with the idea, Chopra had his doubts. He explained that although Varun would look great as a cop in the intense scenes, he didn’t quite match the vibe of the film's earlier acts.

Chopra was worried that Varun might have a tough time genuinely capturing the deep vulnerability needed for Manoj’s story in Chambal and Mukherjee Nagar, where he’s gearing up for the UPSC exam. Because of this, the team decided to drop the idea of casting Dhawan and instead brought in Vikrant Massey, which turned out to be a fantastic choice.

Zero Se Restart is set to be a real gem for movie buffs, giving a unique look into the creation of 12th Fail. This documentary hits theaters on December 13, 2024, and is essential viewing for fans of the film and anyone interested in the filmmaking process. Keep an eye on OTTplay for the latest news from the streaming and cinema scene.
