Filmmaker Anil Sharma has been in the spotlight lately, balancing a bunch of film projects. While fans are eagerly waiting for news on Gadar 3, he’s also been busy with other films. One of his recent works is Vanvaas, a family drama that hit theaters in December 2024. Featuring Nana Patekar in the lead role, along with Utkarsh Sharma and a talented cast, it became one of the most talked-about films towards the end of 2024. Now, it’s finally set to stream, and here’s what you need to know.

Vanvaas is set to hit OTT platforms in March

In Vanvaas, we meet Deepak Tyagi (Nana Patekar), an elderly man struggling with severe dementia, leading to frequent memory issues and sudden outbursts. His ungrateful kids, eager to be rid of him, take him to Benaras and leave him at the ghats. There, Veeru (Utkarsh Sharma), a young orphan, discovers Deepak and looks after him. After a few heartfelt songs and some intense moments, Veeru decides to help Deepak find his way back home.

Meanwhile, back at home, Deepak’s children have already declared him dead and are plotting to grab his fortune. Will he make it back? And if he does, will he still belong there?

After a lackluster run in theaters, Vanvaas is gearing up for its premiere on Zee5. It’s set to stream on March 14, and Zee5 subscribers can catch the film as part of their regular plan, without any extra rental costs. It will also be available through OTTplay Premium.

Anil Sharma Talks About the Buzz Around His Projects

Anil Sharma isn’t one to shy away from trying out different genres, and he sees Vanvaas as a sort of "homecoming" for himself. In a recent chat, the filmmaker shared that he’s often been warned against certain creative decisions, but he sticks to his gut feelings.

He reminisced about how many people advised him not to include the famous hand pump scene in Gadar 2, but he went for it anyway, and the rest is history. Sharma pointed out that he’s been hearing such advice for years, but he ultimately does what he believes is right. “This has been a constant. Back in 1980, people were saying times had changed. In 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, it was the same story. I’ve been hearing this for four decades. Even if you watch a movie from the 1940s, you’ll find the same complaints about changing times.”

When asked how he deals with the criticism and chatter around his films, Anil Sharma replied with a thoughtful perspective: “Whatever happens with the film is on me. If it does well, it’s thanks to everyone’s hard work. But if it flops, that’s on me. Maybe I messed up—it's my issue.”

Vanvaas is gearing up for its OTT release, so if you missed it in theaters, you can catch the intense drama from the comfort of your home. It’ll be streaming on Zee5 starting March 14, and if you’re an OTTplay Premium subscriber, you can watch it too. Keep an eye on OTTplay for more news about this and all things streaming and movies!
