It is uncommon for a young filmmaker to select a science-fiction mockumentary as their third project, particularly within the Malayalam film industry, which is renowned for its grounded narratives and realistic representations. However, Arun Chandu defied expectations with his film Gaganachari, successfully captivating audiences alongside the Anarkali Marikar-led production. The young director has now revealed his upcoming film, titled Vala, and has also unveiled the first-look poster.
Vala cast
Vala brings together Arun Chandu and the cast of Gaganachari, which includes Gokul Suresh, Aju Varghese, Anarkali Marikar, and K B Ganeshkumar. Additionally, the film features Madhav Suresh and John Kaippallil. Notably, this marks the first collaboration between actor-politician Suresh Gopi's sons, Gokul Suresh and Madhav Suresh, in Vala.
Vala first-look poster
Recently, the creators of Vala unveiled the initial poster for the film. This poster featured a depiction of Earth as seen from space, intertwined with red, tentacle-like wires. In a bid to generate excitement for the film, the creators stated on social media, "The apocalypse is here. The dead are rising, and survival is the only option. VALA will keep you on the edge of your seat."
The poster raises the intriguing question: "Are we living in a simulation?"
In a previous interview, the director discussed a project centred on simulative climactic fiction, expressing his desire to secure backing for this ambitious endeavour. With the recent announcement, it appears that the young filmmaker has successfully garnered the necessary support. "Vala" is produced by Underdogs Entertainments and co-produced by Letters Entertainments.
This film, anticipated to be another science fiction adventure, is scheduled for release in 2025.
Back-to-back zombie films in Malayalam
On Christmas Eve, Arun Chandu posted a video featuring Aju Varghese and Gokul Suresh, hinting at the impending release of Vala and indicating that a thrilling zombie film is currently in development. The Instagram post inquired, "Is it the season for zombies?"
Hours prior to the unveiling of the first-look poster for Vala on Christmas Day, the announcement of another Malayalam zombie film, Jambi, was made. Directed by George Kora and featuring Pearle Maaney, Jambi is produced by Weekend Blockbusters and is scheduled for release in theatres in 2026.
