It was expected to be in theatres in September, but Real Star Upendra’s latest directorial UI has chosen to go with a Christmas outing instead. The team has decided to go with a December 20 theatrical release, after their earlier plan of a Deepavali outing was scuttled when Sriimurali’s Bagheera was announced instead.
Moving away from a festival release, though, does not mean that UI has an open field at the box office. If Deepavali is chock-a-block with multiple film releases, the year end is just as jam-packed. At the moment, UI will have at least 6 major releases from Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi to contend with, besides a title or two from Hollywood.
According to reports, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s directorial debut, Barroz is gunning to be the Christmas release of the year. The 3D adaptation of the novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, the film has Mohanlal in the title role and is expected to be in theatres on December 19 or 20. Unni Mukundan’s pan-India release Marco, a neo-noir action thriller, that will release in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi, has booked a December 20 theatrical release.
From Tamil, it is director Vetrimaaran’s crime thriller Viduthalai Part 2 that has a December 20 release date. Adapted from a short story called Thunaivan, Viduthalai is led by Vijay Sethupathi and Soori. Manju Warrier and Anurag Kashyap are the new cast additions in the sequel.
Extra-Ordinary Man co-stars Nithiin and Sreeleela reunite for Robinhood, a Telugu romantic drama by Venky Kudumala. The film, which has Nithiin playing a thief, will release on December 20.
Naga Chaitanya’s film Thandel, in which he plays a fisherman who gets caught by Pakistani forces while out in international waters, is said to be a December 20 release. The film also stars Sai Pallavi, among others.
And last, but not the least, the confirmed Hindi release is Akshay Kumar’s Welcome to the Jungle. The film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Disha Patani, among many others.
