On Friday, Disney+ Hotstar announced via Instagram that the film All We Imagine As Light will be available for streaming on the platform starting January 3. The post's caption highlighted, "Festival de Cannes Grand Prix Winner 2024 and recipient of 2 Golden Globe Nominations - Payal Kapadia’s remarkable work, All We Imagine As Light, will premiere on #DisneyPlusHotstar on January 3. This is a film you won’t want to miss."
Director Payal Kapadia expressed her enthusiasm regarding the streaming release by stating, "I am delighted by the affection that All We Imagine as Light has garnered from everyone. Following a successful run in theatres, I am pleased to announce that it will now be accessible for viewing on Disney+ Hotstar. I am eager to share it with a broader audience."
All We Imagine As Light has received nominations for both the Golden Globe and the Critics Choice Award.
Payal Kapadia's film, All We Imagine As Light, has recently received two nominations for the Golden Globe Awards. It has been recognized in the category of Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, while the director herself has been nominated for Best Director, marking her as only the third female director from Asia to achieve this distinction. Additionally, the film has secured a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at The Critics Choice Awards.
Featuring performances by Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon, and Azees Nedumangad, the narrative delves into the interconnected lives of two Malayali nurses residing in Mumbai. The film made history by being the first Indian production in three decades to participate in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was honoured with the Grand Prix in 2024.
Following the unsuccessful bid of India's official entry for the Oscars 2025, Laapataa Ladies, to secure a place on the Oscars shortlist, numerous critics and fans contended that All We Imagine As Light should have been selected as India's representative for the Oscars. Some even criticized the Film Federation of India (FFI) for not opting for Kapadia's film. In response to the criticism, FFI jury chair Jahnu Barua stated to HT that the jury found technical aspects of Payal's film to be lacking.
