Akshay Kumar is currently enjoying the success of his latest film, Sky Force, in which he stars alongside Veer Pahariya. He is now preparing to appear in a historical drama featuring R Madhavan and Ananya Panday in significant roles. Recent reports indicate that the film, previously rumoured to be titled Shankara, focuses on the renowned lawyer C Sankaran Nair, who engaged in a legal struggle against the British Empire during the 1920s. This narrative is inspired by the book The Case That Shook the Empire, authored by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat. New developments have revealed that the film has been renamed Kesari Chapter 2.
Akshay Kumar's Shankara undergoes a title change
Produced by Karan Johar, the film is scheduled for release in theatres on March 14, 2025, coinciding with the Holi festival. According to a report from Bollywood Hungama, the filmmakers have opted for the new title, Kesari Chapter 2. While the 2019 film Kesari depicted the Battle of Saragarhi, Kesari Chapter 2 is centred on a distinct historical event. A source informed the portal, "Kesari, an emotionally charged action film, highlighted the sacrifices made by Sikhs during the pre-Independence period. The film about C Sankaran Nair is a courtroom drama, making it quite different from the 2019 release. Nevertheless, as it also addresses the valiant contributions and sacrifices of the Sikh community against the British and features Akshay Kumar, the title Kesari Chapter 2 was deemed fitting. Interestingly, similar to Kesari, Kesari Chapter 2 will also premiere during the Festival of Colours."
More about Akshay Kumar's film
The film was announced in October 2024. It will mark the directorial debut of writer Karan Singh Tyagi. While sharing the announcement on social media, the makers wrote, "An unknown story an unheard truth. Starring Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan & Ananya Panday - this untitled film is releasing in cinemas on 14th March 2025. Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi." It will showcase the shocking cover-up of a massacre that pushed India's top barrister C Sankaran Nair to fight an unprecedented battle against the British Empire.
The publication examined the defamation trial of 1924, during which Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab and the mastermind behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, initiated a lawsuit against Sankaran.
Featuring a historical theme, an exceptional cast, and an ideal festive setting, this film is among the most anticipated releases of 2025.
