Unni Mukundan's 'Marco': A New Contender Against 'Pushpa 2' at the Box Office

Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan's neo-noir action thriller is approaching the conclusion of its theatrical run, following an impressive performance that enabled the A-rated, highly violent film to enter the Rs 100 crore club. The primary contributors to this success were the original Malayalam version and the Hindi dubbed edition, which collectively earned Rs 12 crore. The Telugu version, released ten days after the film's initial launch on December 20, contributed nearly Rs 5 crore, while the Tamil version garnered only Rs 1.4 crore.

More than a month post its initial release, having generated approximately Rs 4.4 crore from the Karnataka market with the Malayalam version, Marco is set to debut in theatres with a Kannada-dubbed version on January 31, 2025. The Kannada audience has shown appreciation for films presented in their native language, as evidenced by the box office success of titles such as Jailer, Salaar: Ceasefire, Kalki 2898 AD, and the recent Pushpa 2 The Rule, all of which had simultaneous releases across multiple languages.

It is likely that those interested in viewing Marco based on positive word-of-mouth have already done so. The question arises whether it is too late for Unni Mukundan's film, especially since its OTT rights have been acquired by Sony LIV, with a streaming date anticipated soon. However, as the platform has yet to announce when Marco will be available, there remains potential for the film to perform well at the box office, particularly as many netizens have expressed a desire to see it in a Kannada-dubbed format.

Can Marco achieve double-digit figures with its Kannada-dubbed release, surpassing Pushpa 2?

In a region known for Rocky Bhai and KGF, trade experts believe that a film like Marco will resonate with local audiences. The critical question is whether it can set a new benchmark and exceed the box office performance of Pushpa 2 The Rule, which recorded just under Rs 10 crore for its Kannada version, the highest ever for a dubbed film, with Rs 9.2 crore being the target to surpass.

Marco, a spin-off from the Nivin Pauly-starring film Michael, is poised to be expanded into a trilogy due to its favorable reception. Unni Mukundan has assured audiences that the action and intensity will be significantly enhanced in the second installment. Notably, Marco achieved the distinction of being the first Indian film to receive an R21 rating in Singapore, raising anticipation for what the forthcoming sequel may entail.
