Unni Mukundan on 'Marco': A Salute to Action Icons and Their Legacy

Marco, as articulated by its principal actor Unni Mukundan, was a strategic decision aimed at distancing himself from the family entertainer genre with which he was predominantly linked, and to position himself as an action hero. He was determined that this transition would not occur through a conventional action film; instead, he sought to introduce innovative elements. To achieve this, he recognized the necessity of a specific aesthetic, atmosphere, and a collaborative team capable of realizing his vision.

Unni Mukundan: Malayalam superstar Jayan left a mark on me

Haneef Adeni, the director of Michael, acknowledges the expectations set before him, as noted by Unni. "I informed Haneef that upon the release of Marco, it would serve as my tribute to all action heroes who have graced the screen, particularly the late Malayalam superstar Jayan. His tragic passing occurred while executing a stunt without a body double, which profoundly impacted me. If I do not engage in similar endeavours, I do not truly embody the essence of an action hero. I doubt I will ever be permitted to undertake something as daring as what Jayan accomplished," the actor remarked during a discussion with Anmol Jamwal.

Regarding the late Jayan, Unni firmly asserts that he does not intend to equate his achievements with those of the legendary figure. Instead, he aims to emphasize that he hails from an industry where heroes have undertaken feats that are beyond imagination. "There was a time when Malayalam cinema was primarily recognized for producing a specific type of quality film. I am confident that my team, and the industry as a whole, has the potential to create a diverse array of cinema. I resist being categorized as someone who can only produce one genre. I wish to convey that we are capable of exploring all genres, including high-octane action. Marco is merely a 30 crore film; given our available resources, we have managed to create something exceptional," he asserts.

The actor's physical metamorphosis for the film focused on presenting a polished appearance in a suit, while simultaneously maintaining the agility and speed necessary to evade a bullet. According to Unni, if it were his decision, he would have opted against the bare-chested scene featuring him with a machine gun, preferring instead to remain in the three-piece ensemble.
