Unni Mukundan: Marco Will Struggle on OTT Due to Its Intensity

Unni Mukundan's new movie, Marco, has really split opinions among viewers. Some folks are loving it, while others are pretty shaken up by the level of violence shown. Unni mentioned that those who were disturbed didn’t trash the film; they just found the action a bit too intense. “They acknowledged it as a good film, but it really hit them hard and they struggled with it,” he shared in a chat with Anmol Jamwal, noting that his family had similar reactions too.

Unni Mukundan explains why Marco isn't suitable for OTT platforms

Unni views it as a win-win scenario. He believes that shaking up the audience is just part of the entertainment game. “Honestly, I don’t think Marco will do well on OTT; I’m pretty sure about that. I’m going to get criticized for things like the logic, and so on. Some types of films are meant for theaters, where I want you to disconnect from reality. I’m not trying to underestimate the audience's intelligence by suggesting that the violence on screen influences them. What I mean is that the audience is mature. It’s the intensity of what they see that impacts them; they’re not thinking we’re bad people,” he shares.

Marco is a spin-off from the Malayalam movie Michael, where Unni played one of the villains. He mentions that making a film as action-packed and violent as Marco was part of a bigger strategy. After focusing on family-friendly films, with another one, Get Set Baby, coming out soon, Unni says he’s been working since 2018 to steer his career in a direction where he feels more in control.

Back then, I was thinking about who could really pull off an action flick, and Haneef Adeni was just the right guy; we had teamed up on Michael before. He had a different concept in mind, but for some reason, I was really drawn to the character of Marco. I felt like there was so much I could explore with him since he’s the villain, which means I could really let loose. If I could nail down a solid storyline, I figured I could create a franchise that could go global, Unni shares about the origins of Marco.
