Ekta Kapoor plans a sequel

After nearly ten years, Peeping Moon has disclosed that Ekta Kapoor is reportedly in the process of creating a sequel to Udta Punjab. This suggests that the issue of drug abuse in Punjab will once again be a focal point. According to sources, Ekta has enlisted Aakash Kaushik to write and direct the new installment, although the project remains in its nascent stages.

An industry insider has indicated that production for Udta Punjab 2 is anticipated to commence next year, with the script currently being developed. The production team plans to reach out to actors once the script is finalized, with Ekta expressing a strong desire for Shahid to reprise his role. While formal negotiations have yet to occur, it is reported that preliminary discussions have taken place.

Aside from the drug crisis in Punjab, the sequel is expected to follow a different storyline compared to its predecessor.

Change in direction: Aakash Kaushik replaces Abhishek Chaubey

Abhishek Chaubey will not be involved in the sequel due to other commitments. His replacement, Kaushik, comes from a markedly different cinematic background than the somber tone of Udta Punjab. His previous works include comedic films such as Housefull 4, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and Great Grand Masti. Additionally, he is directing an upcoming espionage comedy for Dharma Productions, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, which is yet to be titled and is scheduled for release later this year.

Udta Punjab 2 represents the forthcoming chapter in a series of sequels and franchise films currently in development. Reports indicate that at least 40 similar projects are at various stages of production, with additional titles anticipated in the near future. This sequel aligns with Ekta Kapoor's established tradition of producing such films through her company, Balaji Motion Pictures.

Although sequels for Tiger Shroff's A Flying Jatt and Vidya Balan's The Dirty Picture were planned, they ultimately did not materialize.
